Funnily enough my wife spotted one on our feeder today, the first for 10+ years. Must be a Nuthatch Autumn! We're in Mid Hampshire UK btw

What did you see in your binoculars today?

An eel! Only the third I've seen in 35 years of living close to the river Arle. This one was 200m from the Eel House, once used to trap 10's if not 100s of eels

    Seen the first Swallow 2024

    Big Garden Birdwatch 2024 Results

Loads of Starlings and sparrows here, although sparrows are down on their peak 15 years ago, flocks of a dozen rather than 30+! The one that we have lots of that doesn't make the list is Dunnock. Literally trip over these in the garden, especially the youngsters. Also we get wrens breeding in...

What did you see in your binoculars today?

Several kites seen this rather gray and drizzly afternoon in Hampshire and a couple of Kestrels, a male and a juvenile. Also a green woodpecker in a tree, which is always nice, a nd a Great White egret which are much less common than small egrets round here, so I was pleased with that. Also...

    Thinking of buying a new OM-1 mk2

I buy a fair bit of second hand when I do buy, if you use reputable dealers- Park Cameras, SRS or FFordes are all ones I've used, you have a guarantee of sorts, although the prices won't be rock bottom.

Buying Maven binoculars in the UK

Maven have their own UK site now - www.mavenbuilt.co.uk I was looking as I'm interested in the C2 7X28, but looks like all the Maven range is there, although a lot of models are shown as out of stock.

What did you see in your binoculars today?

Special evening at my local patch today, 6 very active Marsh Harriers as the sun set and the moon rose. One female harrased by one crow, then mobbed by half a dozen or so. She took refuge on a a tree on "comorant island" a rather small muddy lump in the moddle of the lake. The branch was rather...

    North East London Redwing?

Did you use AWB? (Auto White Balance) I've had the same, a sequence of shots in close vicinity and the odd one where the camera throws a curve ball. I shoot RAW+JPEG so can correct anything that seems out of whack

UK binocular deals, special offers and bargains

Park Cameras currently have a few good deals. I just got a pair of these: (Fujinon 12x28IS) Fujinon TS 12x28 Techno-Stabi Binoculars | Park Cameras The £150 discount pushed me under my limit for a foray into image stabilised binos

Peregrines called "hawks" in a book

As a Brit I would not find the term "Creek" unusual when referring to an inlet running down to the sea, although with relatives in Cornwall, perhaps it's a regional thing.

    Robin behaviour

You often find a very social robin in the garden, we currently have one that not only spends a lot of time on our terrace and or garden furniture, but sits on pots etc when I'm in the garden, and even pops into the house if I leave the back doors open!

Anyone can recommend a good binocular under 200 euro? I prefer 8x32.

I think that may be the case, I have the SV202 8x32 and have no problems with seeing the full field of view with my specs on. I do find the focus, although it has a nice tension to it, is a little slow for my peferences. My sample is well built though.

Yellow Legged Gull and Merlin App- Hampshire UK

I'd like to ask the Forum's opinion on the ability of the Merlin bird ID app to identify a YLG. I regularly visit a small lake close to my house in Hampshire. There are normally good numbers of water birds present. Tonight I visited, and was pleased to see some good displays from the resident...

Advice: Not too expensive toss in the pocket/bag compact binoculars?

I have the Olympus 8x25 WP II for which I paid £79.99. I find the eye placement easy for such a small bino, I fond it more than adequate for a carry anywhere bino. It slips in my camera bag, and this morning in between photographing various stream locos I was able to watch a charm of...

    New 7x

I use this as my hiking bino. It's light, has very easy eye placement and I have no problems using with glasses. Downside, it's not massively bright and build quality is OK but nothing special. £150 on ebay currently, I got my original pair for £89 a few years back!

    UK Dragonflies and Damselflies 2023

Not a rarity but this female broad-bodied chaser spent 20 minutes in my garden here in Hampshire, flying off then returning to her perch on a cane supporting a tomato plant Broad Bodied Chaser by Stephen Morley, on Flickr

Optolyth no longer in business? That’s a shame, when did this happen?

My first too, in 1979 as an 18th birthday present, an 8z40. I've still got them

    Changes in bird populations?

There does seem to be a lot of variation. Thirty years ago I heard and saw cuckoos regularly, now I am lucky to hear one...last year I tracked one down, but none so far in 2023. Conversely, in my patch of Hampshire we seem to be bucking the Yellowhammer trend locally as they are very abundant...

Binoculars convention should be Aperture Divide Magnification, not Magnification x Aperture... ?

No 3 -"8 times" magnification, written as 8x - It is a convention it doesn't have to make sense. For most people using in decent light the objective size is not important, except as a rough idea of the likely size of the bino. Neither 42/8 or 8x42 tell you a lot about important things like...

    Sandpiper Hampshire UK 7/4/23

It was spangly, I'm used to seeing adult Green Sandpipers looking much more uniform dark grey/white.

Definitely three bars, I saw those clearly. Thank you (PS Thanks for the link, that didn't come up when I googled. Mind you based on that I'm going for Solitary Sandpiper ha ha!)
