Opticron Explorer WA ED-R 8x32 Binoculars

I have the Explorer WA ED-R 8x32 and think at its price point it's a good binocular. There's no noticeable CA and I like the small size and light weight. The first pair I received was defective but the replacement is fine. I also bought the Opticron DBA VHD+ 8x42 monocular recently, but it had a...

    Recommendations for 7x birding binoculars

Just wanted to echo recommendations from Mono and Cest several posts back. I bought the Hawke Endurance Marine 7x32 a while ago and the view was great for the price. But the diopter didn't work and they were the last 7x32 the vendor had so I ended up getting the 7x42 monocular instead. But if I...

    DBA VHD+ monocular questions

Bentley03, I did wonder if it was a problem with positioning, because I had blackouts while wearing glasses. So I tried little shifts of position without glasses but that didn't solve the issue. Also, I have two other monoculars and several pairs of binoculars and I've never had this problem...

    DBA VHD+ monocular questions

Albie and Bentley03, I'm glad the 10x42 is working out for you both. And thanks for the tip about the tripod adapter, albie. I returned my defective 8x42. The image was sharp but the outer edge of the view was darker than the center area. It wasn't a gradual transition. There was a fuzzy circle...

    DBA VHD+ monocular questions

I'm hoping to get some feedback from people who have the DBA VHD+ monocular. I just bought the 8x42 model. When I have the eyecup twisted out all the way, I sometimes notice a subtle circular reflection in the view, which I suspect is from the inside of the eyecup. If I twist the eyecup down all...

    New Binocular Bargains Thread

B&H is doing their mega sale again for another day or so. Several binoculars on sale, Zeiss, Vanguard, Steiner and others. There's also a discounted Vanguard scope. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/mega-deal-zone/deals/Binoculars/ci/1010...

Why do you need a wide field of view for birding?

I like to travel light on nature walks and hikes. I carried a compact 10x25 ED binocular for a while, and it was great for perching birds and often water birds. But the narrow FOV made it almost impossible to follow anything that moved too fast. So I switched to a wider 8x32. Even though the...

    Best low- to mid-priced monocular

I have two Hawke Endurance ED monoculars, the 8x42 and 7x42 marine, very happy with both. The 8x is lighter and smaller than the 7x, but both fit in a jacket pocket. Because of the 42mm objectives they're good any time of the day. Btw, for lots of people it's challenging to hold a 10x42 steady.

    Car binoculars

I would expect the Diamondbacks to hold up well with the temperature fluctuations and car vibration. And if they don't, the Vortex warranty is excellent. Also, if you like your Midas 10x50, have you considered the Midas 8x42? In my experience, optics with sturdy construction hold up best in cars...

    GPO Passion ED 8 x 32 Review

Thanks for your helpful feedback, Anderlfs. I'm not expecting a big leap in quality, but eliminating reflections/glare would be nice. Cameraland's sale price on the GPO is very tempting.

    GPO Passion ED 8 x 32 Review

I'm wondering how the GPO Passion ED 8x32 compares with the Opticron Explorer WA ED-R 8x32? I own the Explorer, nice for the price, but I've had issues with reflections late in the day. From reviews and comments here it seems like the GPO would be a step up. (Cameraland has them on sale right...

Vortex Viper HD and Bushnell Trophy - A noob’s review

Yes, it's much more satisfying to use better bins! But when I would unexpectedly be driving near a interesting bird habitat I was always glad I had the Trophys with me. I eventually gave them to a relative and put better bins in the car. But after about 6-8 weeks the focus stopped working. So...

Vortex Viper HD and Bushnell Trophy - A noob’s review

I used the Trophy 8x32 as my car binocular for a while. Very impressed with the build quality! They were unaffected by temperature changes and vibration.

Which monocular as a substitute for binoculars...?

James, I use two monoculars regularly. Both Hawke Endurance ED models, 7x42 marine and 8x42. I like the extra reach of the 8x but the 7x is easier to focus one-handed. Tried a 10x but couldn't hold it steady. Let us know what you end up with. Wishing you a full recovery.

Question about updated BD II XD models

Thanks for the information. The older Kowa description that I read said there was fluorite in the glass, and the newer marketing material specifies Prominar glass, so I wasn't sure what the difference was. Based on your feedback it doesn't seem like a significant change?

Question about updated BD II XD models

The Kowa BD II XD series is currently advertised as having Prominar glass, like the Genesis models. Does anyone know if this is an upgrade over previous BD II XD models? Or more of a marketing thing?

Monoculars - anyone use these things ?

The Endurance 7x42 is sharp with accurate color. The focus knob is near the objective lens, which makes it easy to focus one-handed.

Advice: Not too expensive toss in the pocket/bag compact binoculars?

Have you considered a monocular? I have a 7x42 and an 8x42 and prefer them to compact binoculars due to better low light performance.
