Biking Birder 2015 - A cycle ride to every RSPB and WWT reserve.

Superb achievement! Well done Gary! John

Biking Birder 2015 - A cycle ride to every RSPB and WWT reserve.

Good - that would have been a terrible #300! John
  4. Farnboro John

Biking Birder 2015 - A cycle ride to every RSPB and WWT reserve.

Anyone betting against him being on 300 before leaving Fair Isle? I'm not! John
  5. Farnboro John

Biking Birder 2015 - A cycle ride to every RSPB and WWT reserve.

Fourteen to go for 300: what are the non-rarities left? - mind you, from this point it would be quite surprising if he didn't make it just on rarities. John
  6. Farnboro John

Biking Birder 2015 - A cycle ride to every RSPB and WWT reserve.

Well, I would say that Wood Warbler is starting to look dodgy but the others are all still in the frame: 6 more without any rarities (YBW down twice!) for a requirement for 18 rares by the end of the year - with a stay on Fair Isle just about to start..... Eminently do-able. Go Gary! John
  7. Farnboro John

Biking Birder 2015 - A cycle ride to every RSPB and WWT reserve.

Have faith: I'm only on 258 and I reckon I'm going to crack it (with the internal combustion engine) - Gary only has 24 birds to go. Its in the bag, even with only pedal power! Could you remind us what non-rarities he has still up his sleeves? Incidentally, does Gary take his bike onto Fair Isle...

Coll of the Wild? I'll get my coat.... John
  10. Farnboro John

Biking Birder 2015 - A cycle ride to every RSPB and WWT reserve.

That's 5/6 of the work done in under half the year - on a bike. It is a tremendous achievement: and with a few bankers to catch up with during the rarity doldrums of June and early July (I may be going to regret saying that) Gary is in an excellent position to clinch the record and get over the...

Biking Birder 2015 - A cycle ride to every RSPB and WWT reserve.

Good catch, do we expect an entry in Your most recent life bird then? John

Biking Birder 2015 - A cycle ride to every RSPB and WWT reserve.

Bravo - getting that one away now will cause less heartburn later! John

Biking Birder 2015 - A cycle ride to every RSPB and WWT reserve.

Woodlark.... undisclosed site.... yawn. If you're going to suppress something, make it something interesting! ;) John
  14. Farnboro John

Biking Birder 2015 - A cycle ride to every RSPB and WWT reserve.

Two hundred comfortably inside the first third of the year, plenty of time to knock off another hundred. Go Gary! John
  15. Farnboro John

Biking Birder 2015 - A cycle ride to every RSPB and WWT reserve.

As there seems to be some newbie interest in the Lake District Goldie this spring, could we possibly have some detail from Gary on his dip - how many hours, any anecdotal evidence of presence/absence etc? I am conscious of the heavy irony of this request, after I suggested we should be able to...

Biking Birder 2015 - A cycle ride to every RSPB and WWT reserve.

That's couple of goodies to get out of the way. Nice work! John

Biking Birder 2015 - A cycle ride to every RSPB and WWT reserve.

This is perhaps going to sound preachy, but if Gary really wants this record, given that he "only" needs another 126 birds he is going to have to stop concentrating on cycling all over the place and start biting the bullet that if a bird takes two or three days, then the effort has to be put in...

Biking Birder 2015 - A cycle ride to every RSPB and WWT reserve.

Sorry Gary, Only just picked up your message at 2300 tonight. If you give me a list of wants I'll give you some sites. See PM. Cheers John

Biking Birder 2015 - A cycle ride to every RSPB and WWT reserve.

I'm surprised he hasn't got Little Owl yet but plenty of time.... Little Owls and Yellowhammers we still have around the Farnborough area (loosely that is) but the other two, no chance. For Grey Partridge next stop must be The Burgh which should also produce Corn Bunting and Yellowhammer. If...

Biking Birder 2015 - A cycle ride to every RSPB and WWT reserve.

Good luck with the American Herring Gull, I think a Harrier from Culdrose is the only way to catch that when its reported! John

Biking Birder 2015 - A cycle ride to every RSPB and WWT reserve.

An outstanding effort and without being hampered by the requirement to visit reserves of no use to listing, 300 ought to be un morceau de gateau next year. Happy New Year and good luck! John
  22. Farnboro John

Biking Birder 2015 - A cycle ride to every RSPB and WWT reserve.

Very much looking forward to the next species being announced! I would like (if its not too much trouble) to have some stats on how many reserves visited and how many still to go, as well. Power to the pedals! John

Biking Birder 2015 - A cycle ride to every RSPB and WWT reserve.

Its all gone a bit quiet. What's happening? John

Biking Birder 2015 - A cycle ride to every RSPB and WWT reserve.

Assuming the Riggindale Golden Eagle watchpoint is on your itinerary, Ring Ouzels breed all along the crags and can usually be seen from the watchpoint. John
  25. Farnboro John

Biking Birder 2015 - A cycle ride to every RSPB and WWT reserve.

I think this is well on. There's nothing "unachievable" in the list (well Scottish Crossbill perhaps!) and for every bird on the list that Gary misses, there will be a proper BB that will be in the areas he is in, instead. Particularly true of his sojourn on the Northern Isles I should think! I...
