    Durham Birding

Not content with a single Crossbill singing in the (Washington) garden yesterday, today he brought some of his mates and a flock of at least thirteen were feeding in the pine trees. Couple of rubbish record pictures.

Didn't realise this Duck has been discussed before. http://www.birdforum.net/showthread.php?t=217861 Gadwall x Tufted Duck seems the favoured opinion.

Almost certainly the same individual that visited Castle Lake, Bishop Middleham in late December last year. Presumed Red-crested Pochard x Pochard hybrid.

Thanks Derek, your being very kind ;) Fortunately the Geese stayed still long enough to have their photo taken and I got lucky with the Fox. Don't think I'll ever get into photography properly, it's way too technical for me :-O

Three White-fronted Geese at Low Hardwick this morning, though they refused to pose together. A fox also put in an appearance.

    Durham Birding

Anyone planning to visit Bishop Middleham in the next few day's might like to consider arriving from the West, as the road leading into the village from the Sedgefield (A177) direction is under water as Stoneybeck Lake has continued to expand. Still it was worth the detour with a good selection...

    Durham Birding

Hi Matt, I'm still here! Unfortunately for a number of reasons I havn't done much birding since August but the enthusiasm is returning (especially after finding Bishop Middleham's first ever Long-tailed Duck yesterday) and I'll get the blog going again. Thanks for asking :t:

    Durham Birding

Hoped the stormy weather might have dropped a few waders into Bishop Middleham this afternoon but certainly wasn't expecting to find this, first on Stoneybeck Lake then later it relocated to Castle Lake.

    Durham Birding

Hi Andy, I've done some birding around Beamish, as you say its a great area and generally underwatched. There's Kingfisher on the Beamish Burn, Red Kite over the woods, and an excellent selection of other species. Starting from the south and working north there's Ousborough Woods, Pockerley...

Caught the lads leaving (as I arrived to twitch the Grey Plover, first time for everything) and Jimmy mentioned it. Cheers Steve :t:

Only the second site record of Grey Plover at Bishop Middleham this afternoon, also 3 Wood Sand but no sign of yesterday's Temminck's. Thanks to Joe & John for the heads up :t:

:king: That's why I upped sticks and moved 'my' patch to BishMidd :-O 107 species so far this year, can't believe I havn't seen Ruff or Kingfisher yet.

Hi Chris, That must have been me! Can't describe myself as a local but I'm usually there on any day that ends in the letter y ;) Nice to meet you and glad you enjoyed your visit. :t: I rarely come away disappointed, its one of those places where you just don't know what your going to find. When...

    Durham Birding

Hi Matt, I certainly wouldn't say it was easy unless you can get prolonged views of either bird, as they are always on the move and quite often are hidden in long grass. Have a look at Ian's excellent pictures here to compare the two. http://www.teesmouthbc.com/forumtbc/index.php?board=10.0 As...

    Durham Birding

Hi Mal, If your desperate you could always try this ;) http://bishopmiddlehambirding.blogspot.com/2010/11/castle-lake-intro.html The Blue-headed Wagtail was feeding in the field just south of the hide, just go over the stile in the corner of the field and follow the wall south, the bird could...

    Durham Birding

Hi Gary, Don't know if you've been to WWWT or Barmston Pond but if you pass these locations on the Washington highway heading west then take the second slip road off and turn right to head north, follow this short stretch until you reach a roundabout with a Kwik Fit and car wash next to it and...

    Durham Birding

Hi Alfie, I did a drive-by twitch at about 12.45 and saw a few in the roadside trees just beyond the car park entrance above the subway. Still waiting for them to find the berries next to Durham House beside the Galleries bus station.

    Durham Birding

Hi Matt, I was down there last Thursday, the only ice-free area at the time was at the extreme northern end with Green Sand, Redshank and Mallard present. The lake at Hardwick Hall had a reasonable selection of wildfowl on it, Wigeon, Gadwall, Pochard etc. Obviously there's a thaw in progress...
