That's a juv Common Tern you have there. Very late record, as juv terns in early Nov are often Arctics. Compared to bulky Arctic, the bill is too bulky and long, it shows too much orange, the legs are too long are bright, the dark on the wing coverts too extensive and overall it appears quite a...

Had a play about with photo in Picasa, and I would put my money on Black-necked Grebe. There are not many other possibilites, but Shag or a scoter sp spring to mind. The flanks are clearly paler than the upperparts which would rule out both of those species (unless they were tipped on their...

I was still coming down from a brilliant few days on the coast when I wrote that post, and couldn't quite understand why others didn't want to share in that. One person's cup of tea, isn't always the others though!

I mean no kind of offence, but I'm amazed when birders persist at inland sites when there's a fall on the coast. For me, there is little to rival the sight of a recently arrived migrant which you know has just crossed the North Sea. Each to their own however!

What do people reckon about the populations of our summer warblers this year. The impressions that I have are as follows: Willow Warbler - average Chiffchaff - seemed well up when they first arrived, but seemed to drop down slightly thereafter Wood Warbler - down Lesser Whitethroat - up...

Is there definitely just one Spoonbill about? I had a sneaky feeling there was two over weekend. Probably more likely it's just the same bird being very mobile.

Hi Neil, As other's have said, there's uncertainty surrounding pale Willow Warblers - nobody seems to know where they originate from. Part of the reason a bird is labelled as a 'sub-species' is to highlight where it originates from, but because we don't where pale Willow Warblers originate...

Had a look at Derwent Reservoir yesterday....cracking sight was 21 Whooper Swans at far western end. Oystercatchers were everywhere - at least 100, with 116 Wigeon still present. Drumming Snipe put in a good display in surrounding fields. Old news from Monday, had a look up mid-Wear - fairly...

I've seen them in early April on Leas, plus what were probably different birds (migrants) at end of April/early May. Two were still on Leas on 25th March last year - not sure after this.

I was freezing my selection of nuts off down at Whitburn Obs this am. A juv Pom Skua N was highlight and an adult Little Gull also headed in the same direction. Ducks were down on yesterday's mini-fest thought with only two species (Eider and Common Scoter). Frustrating was a 'grey goose' sp...
