    Pocket guides

yep this new Mitchell Beasley book has grow on me. it sure is light to carry, with a good few drawings of each bird but on the downside it does not give the size of the birds nor location maps. which to someone new to birdwatching like myself is not too good. i've just wrote the sizes next to...

thanks for the reply Colin. the wings did look very dark and it was quite hard to tell any difference to the great black-backs that were quite close to it. i'm pretty new to birdwatching so i could not say for sure. all quite interesting though :)

i went down to vane farm on saturday and had a try on all the scopes there (they had a fair there over the weekend). in the end i got an opticron IS 60 with a fixed 25x W. i think its quite a good compromise between getting a lightweight one like the MM2 and a big scope. thanks for everyone's...

    Lesser black-backed gull?

i was out for a walk at the sea yesterday (NE scotland , just above aberdeen) and saw what i think was a Lesser black-backed gull. it had very yellow feet and was about the right size compared to all the herring gulls and the odd great black-backed gull around it. But it's wings were as black...

What is your favourite bird.... and why?

it's tricky to pick just one favourite. so here's my top two, though it changes all the time. Water Rail - such loud noises from such a little bird. nice colours and great walk. Fulmar- love to watch them fly plus the chicks are great, big ball of fluff with a little head stuck on top :)

    summer feeding?

i don't think there can be much harm in all year round feeding. do the same birds come every day? do you get to recognize an individual birds? i live in a top floor flat so don't fed the birds in the garden cos i can't really see the garden unless i hang out the window. we have tried one of...

    Pocket guides

just got "The New Birdwatcher's Pocket Guide to Britain and Europe" from Mitchell Beazley. can't make up my mind if i like it as much as my old one - "Birds of Britain and North-west europe" from Pica Press. the colours look a little dark but the amount of illustrations is very good. anyone else...
