    Blue Tit babies :(

Thanks for the info everyone. Over the past few years I've watched successive broods religiously! Yes I've noticed usually early morning fledging Joanne. One year (2005) 8 blue tits fledged over three days as Poecile said as well. But I've never had any fledge before day 19 before, so I'll let...

    Blue Tit babies :(

I've got Blue Tits nesting in my back garden nestbox and the babies were born on the 5th May. The time to fledging is 18 - 21 days, but this afternoon they've been flapping their wings getting ready to fly! How close are they to fledging if they're doing this? They're only 15 days old! Is it...

    South Africa

I will be going to South Africa in a couple of weeks to Kruger NP. This might seem like a very vague question, but what kind of birds can I expect? Are there any specialities there?

Blue Tits, Robins, Starlings and Great Tits nesting1

It's pretty early but I've already got Blue and Great Tits, Robins and Starlings nesting in my nestboxes! I'm so excited! The Blue Tits started building the nest on the 26th March, a full month earlier than they did last year (using same box in the back garden). I think egg laying is underway...

    Great Tits ALREADY nesting???

Been watching the Starlings closely David! The good news is that the Great Tits weren't nesting too early. Starlings are instead! I'm pretty sure the nest is still being built as I saw material taken in today, but I can't be sure as I saw the female (?) poking her head out and then staying in...

Frist Swallow and House Martins of the year!

Last Thursday I saw the first Swallow this year on the way to Northiam in East Sussex and since then I've seen several more! With the weather as it is, it really feels as if one Swallow does make a summer! Then today I saw three House Martins above the roofs of my neighbours' houses! I thought...

    Spring migration

There were three Wheatears at Rye Harbour nature reserve in East Susses last Saturday. Today three House Martins returned to the colony on my estate!

Great news I can't wait for it!

    Great Tits ALREADY nesting???

Great news everyone! I've also found that a Robin is nesting here! It's the first time I've actually seen it while living here! The only problem is it's in a pile of sticks/plant litter etc just 30 cm off the ground with nothing to stop the rain or anything! I hope they'll be OK. I haven't had...

    Great Tits ALREADY nesting???

You two are lucky having Robins nesting! My open-fronted box is ignored every year! Been enjoying your site for a couple of years now David, it's great!

    Sparrow Terrace

Really? I wonder why that is! It would explain last year's absence then!

    Found a Dormouse?

Thanks very much Gareth and devon.birder. I'll try to find out if it's a Dormouse. I'll also look at those helpful links. I'll keep you posted! From the description of typical nests I'm guessing it will be a Wood Mouse, but there's always a possibility!

    Great Tits ALREADY nesting???

Worrying isn't it? I hope they aren't nesting, but next weekend I'll watch the box for a few hours to see what happens (something I didn't start till late April last year!) Thanks everyone!

    Sparrow Terrace

I've had one up since 2005 and it hasn't been used at all. Well not by House Sparrows! In 2005 one (?) pair of Blue Tits used it, nesting and egg-laying in all three holes! It must have been very stressful etc, so I'd advise ones with holes on each side and one on the front. I think it would...

    Found a Dormouse?

I have a Dormouse nestbox up on a tree in the copse outside my house. Blue Tits nested in it last year, but unsuccessfully. When I checked the box after they'd left, there were five unhatched eggs. Today I looked in it pre-cleaning and found it was full! There was no flattened down moss at...

Signs of a changing world (?)

I personally think global warming exists and I'm witnessing it now. There are loads of signs around my home which are really worrying me, and I was wondering what the implications for the local wildlife could be. There are some shrubs outside my house which finally shed their still-green leaves...

    Great Tits ALREADY nesting???

Last week some old nesting material from last year was found on our drive under the Starling nestbox, which was used by Great Tits last year. I hadn't got round to cleaning it out yet, so looked in it today. I found a half made nest with nesting "cup" already made! Surely they can't be nesting...

    First signs?

My Blue Tits have been checking out boxes every day for a week! It's crazy! There are even flies and midges still buzzing around my garden as well.

Earliest Ever Sign of Spring !

I'm not really enjoying it knowing many species are confused and seasons are getting out of kilter. I'd rather have seasonal weather now and the warm weather when it's supposed to be! Apparently some House Martins were around Minsmere on 19th December (!) although I don't think that's got much...

Earliest Ever Sign of Spring !

I saw a butterfly today! It's ridiculous! I went for a walk through the countryside and it felt like spring was well underway. Birds were singing, catkins were coming out, buds were opening everywhere. Sadly though I expect this is a sign of things to come.

    Anyone missing winter thrushes?

I would also think a lot of them are still in Russia etc. I had a few Redwings go over (literally) during late October. The same time last year there were hundreds. It's been unusually mild right across Europe, and into Russia as well, so maybe they haven't felt the need to get over here yet!

    Effects of the mild winter

I saw a butterfly in my garden early this month and there are still midges around where I live! Plenty of flowers about refusing to die at the moment as well. I hope the current more seasonal weather continues!

Humans causing mass extinction is good news!

Thanks for the replies. I never thought I'd spark such a debate! I also agree token conservation won't wonrk, but I did feel the ethical part of the debate was being ignored. I don't mind the thread being hijacked, it's made interesting reading! Keep it coming!

Humans causing mass extinction is good news!

Drive change?? I'm speechless. It seems many of the environmentally conscious of us have given up on the whole concept of conservation, and are siding with the teacher! And to add a point, it wasn't to make us think in my opinion. He never offers debate, he justs uses assemblies as a soapbox for...
