    Waxwing Colour-Ringing 2016

Hi Everyone, I have also posted this in Bird Banding, apologies for duplication but trying to reach as wide an audience as possible...... Grampian Ringing Group have colour ringed nearly 400 Waxwings this winter - 2016 birds have metal over White on their right leg along with three small...

    Waxwing Colour Ring Sightings

Hi Everyone, Grampian Ringing Group have colour ringed nearly 400 Waxwings this winter - 2016 birds have metal over White on their right leg along with three small colour rings on their left leg which let us identify specific individuals. Aberdeen City still has a flock of up to 400 Waxwings...

    Crossbills

Michael ( it is Michael, right ? ;) ) the caveat I used is "many" ! Alan (and possibly Desmond) also miscategorised some Commons as "Scottish" which just shows how important physical evidence (Biometrics and Calls) are in making a classification. The fact that it was assumed scotica was...

    Crossbills

Your views and arguments are just too simplistic I am afraid. You assume variations in crossbill call structures are "dialects" - why ? You also assume that Crossbills hear other crossbill calls as we do. Where is your evidence for this ? The call a crossbill emits is often in relation to the...

Top bird is a male in it's first year, called a 'golden cock' by some. Lindsay

Rare and Scarce Birds in Staffordshire

Xeno Canto site Matt lists above is a good start, the Sound Approach book even better and SOC site I believe has the RSPB classified calls ( but not any variants). Cheers, Lindsay

Rare and Scarce Birds in Staffordshire

I tried to do a sonogram, only very very faint 4E (glip) calls that I could see, possibly one variation I could hear but nothing screaming "Parrot". See also the main thread for bill structures, which I hope will help: http://www.birdforum.net/showpost.php?p=2902200&postcount=167 Cheers, Lindsay

Rare and Scarce Birds in Staffordshire

The OP posted the pictures seemingly not knowing eg. therefore not ruling out Parrot ? Semantics I know, but still...... I agree with you that people should keep looking and recording. Those that have provided photographic and audio/video evidence, whether or not these may or may not contain...

Rare and Scarce Birds in Staffordshire

They are obvious Commons, don't know why people are having such a problem believing me in my previous post when I stated as much ? Who is your "crossbill ringer" - I only know 3 people in addition to myself (in UK). Lindsay

Rare and Scarce Birds in Staffordshire

That is an atypical example WB ! The angle of the shot and close proximity of a telephoto lens can produce results like that. This bird has one of the biggest bill depths of any Parrot I have handled (the one in hand): http://www.pinemuncher.blogspot.co.uk/2009/07/barred-for-life.html And...

Rare and Scarce Birds in Staffordshire

I did, sorry. I think you'd have a problem getting any of them accepted by a regional rarities committee..... Calls would have been preferable to photos especially since the flight call of these Parrot types down south at least seems consistent between the various sites ? Lindsay

Rare and Scarce Birds in Staffordshire

The Crossbills in posts 5542 to 5545 are Common Crossbills in my opinion. See http://www.birdforum.net/showpost.php?p=2900188&postcount=154 Best wishes, Lindsay http://pinemuncher.blogspot.com

Wild in Aberdeen - City and Shire

If a flat roof, most probably drinking in pools of water that may have formed. I thought that it was you that I saw ! There were a few colour ringed birds in that flock - might be good to check all photos. Cheers, Lindsay

    Crossbill Scottish Highlands

I am sure I read (or he told me in a PM) that when Mark Constantine was recording Parrots in Fenno-Scandia that he found a noticeable variation in call structures in that region - apologies to Mark/Magnus if I have got this wrong. This is possibly akin to the Bullfinch calls from this region...

    Crossbill Sp. Glen Affric, Scotland

Hi Adam and everyone. Apologies, I am not on here that often and missed this post. If I had to make a call on those photos, I'd say Parrot Crossbill. This is based on several things: 1)Plumage colouration. 2)Bill Width in the 'front on' aspects. 3) Bill proportions - square appearance...

    cold weather ringing

John, I really don't think this sort of vague anecdote is helpful. I am a qualified ringer and I have never attended a ringing session where nets were a 15 minute walk apart except for one large site where several large teams are operating the nets (basically 2 different sites). If you, as a...

    Crossbill ID Gloucestershire

As the researcher referred to I can categorically confirm that I have had Parrot Crossbills feeding on Larch many times ! These birds were ID'd by call type initially (at Glen Tanar) but later after I had colour-ringed birds these were also observed feeding on Larch from late winter through to...

Wild in Aberdeen - City and Shire

Many thanks for posting and reporting this colour-ringed Waxwing. If that bird is RGL, which it looks like, it was ringed by myself, Raymond Duncan and Euan Ferguson on 2/12/12 in Ferryhill, Aberdeen. Was it in Peterhead when photographed ? Raymond will be able to give a full history of...

    Waxwing invasion 2012/13

There are now just over 400 Waxwings colour-ringed by Grampian Ringing Group. We are pretty much out of berries up here and only had a flock of approaching 150 here today so they must be heading your way ! :eek!: Can all birders/photographers please look out for colour-ringed birds and report...
