It’s been a long time since I’ve been able to add to my year list so it was great to add 2 yesterday. Highlight of the day though was meeting Kev’s baby boy for the 1st time. A very handsome little man.
Anyway. Off we went and parked up at Rest Bay. Then a quick walk along the coastal path...
Cracking day out at Strumble yesterday morning with 2 birders I know via Twitter (though I’ve met Tom several times at Kenfig) and Kev. Risso’s Dolphin was a lifer for me but we also had Common Dolphins and Harbour Porpoises.
Some great birds though I did struggle to pick some out giving some...
Headed down to Ogmore yesterday with the hound. Some decent birders down there and good company. The Wryneck that’s been there for a few days gave excellent views. Big thanks to the birder from Yorkshire who let people use his scope. Spectacular plumage on the bird:t:
Cracking day out with my 8 year old and Kev today. Up at 4 and headed straight to Pittville Park, Cheltenham. Soon our target was found by a birder I presumed to be local:t: . Max got on to it before me so he was absolutely chuffed.
209. Black-crowned Night Heron Lifer #11 B (:B (:B (:
A mad dash down to Penclacwydd after work today. So rushed I got halfway and had to return home for my wallet!! No worries. Lifer in the bag. A great bird and good to meet Chris whom I follow on Twitter.
206. Collared Pratincole Lifer #10 B (:B (:B (:
207. Mediterranean Gull.
Took a half day this afternoon and headed up to Slimbridge. Thanks to the birder from the Midlands for getting me in the right area for this bird. A lifer for me and very unexpected:t: Shame the heat haze meant the view was pretty poor.
204. Little Bustard Lifer #9 B (:
Then, as I was in the...
Had an absolutely brilliant day with my youngest yesterday. Left the house at 06:00 and arrived at Martin's Haven at roughly 07:40. Luckily we just about managed to get on the last boat that was departing to Skomer at 12:00. Will leave earlier next time:eek!:
Killed some time by walking around...
Took the pup for a walk down the Mumbles today for an ice cream. A nice and easy tick for #200 as this species nests on the pier. Great to hear their calls. 5 Grey Seals just around from the pier as well.
Tomorrow I’m heading to Skomer with my youngest. An absolute must if...
I always look forward to a trip to Dinas in Spring and today didn't disappoint. Gorgeous location with great birds. Garden Warblers plentiful along with Siskins, Willow Warblers, Blackcaps, Kites, Goosander, Cuckoos and a couple of Treecreepers. Added the following to the year list.
Nothing new to add today. Predictably, all the Terns from yesterday had left Sker Point. Good to see a few Whimbrel and Barwits knocking around though.
Looking forward to heading up to Dinas tomorrow:t:
Went out with the pup today and did the 6 mile loop around Usk Reservoir. Absolutely superb. Warblers everywhere. Tree Pipits prevalent in the first part of the walk and I'm pretty certain a low flying Red Kite flushed a Whimbrel from the edge of the reservoir. Not seen one here before.
Set off at 04:30 with my youngest yesterday. First stop was the Forest of Dean and then down to Somerset. Had an absolutely brilliant day and is becoming one of our birding highlights of the year. He's now looking forward to going to Skomer in June and heading back to Somerset at Whitsun.
Had a decent walk around Garwnant today with the pup and OH. Great views of a couple of Lesser Redpolls and my first Garden Warbler of the year. Siskins appear to be doing well in the area as well.
179. Garden Warbler
Headed over to the dry (but windy) side of the bridge yesterday. Stopping at Pilning we couldn't pick out the Citrine Wagtail but had great views of a Blue-headed Wagtail and White Wags. A Wheatear and some Linnets were also knocking about in the field.
Keeping an eye on RBA we then headed...
My last day off of the long Easter Weekend. Went down to Sker again with the pup 1st thing. A cracking morning. Heaps of Common Whitethroats, Blackcaps and Willow Warblers and a Lesser Whitethroat on the yellow path.
Down at Sker Point were my main target - Purple Sandpipers. Pleased to get...
Got lucky with the timing today. OH was tied up with completing a job application and the boys were happy playing on the PS4. News came out on the WhatsApp group that a Red-necked Phalarope was at Goldcliff.
Off I went. Good to meet Jack whom I follow on Twitter and always good to catch up with...
So this morning after prepping the leg of lamb for a slow roast, Bud and I headed down to Crymlyn Bog. Had a lovely walk. Plenty of birds around but it was the Warblers that stood out - Chiff, Willow, Cettis, Blackcaps, Reed and Sedge Warblers.
164. Reed Warbler
165. Sedge Warbler
No new species on Saturday but sometimes it’s hard to believe how quickly the time goes. Bud celebrated his 1st Birthday with a walk over the dunes to Sker Point. Did have a nice view of a Little Owl though👍
