Ghana with Ashanti - November 2024

$2,850 usd including food, accommodation, park fees and guiding. Only other costs were flights and the visa. There were 6 of us so would be more if less people. It probably is theoretically possible to do Kakum area independently with taxis. I doubt it would save you very much though so think...

Advice for self-driving with rental the road to Manu

Interesting. In North Peru in 2017, we were stopped all the time by community vigilantes / semi official police (not really sure) who waited at speed bumps. The typical payment was around a dollar though sometimes we pretended not to understand what they were saying. Beware of the speed bumps...

Ghana with Ashanti - November 2024

I'd be tempted to cut locations like Shai Hills, possibly Atewa and Bobiri too. If you have a week, just do Kakum and Ankasa. Kakum, Ankasa and Mole have best birding.

Ghana with Ashanti - November 2024

Yes, you are quite right. We had discussed on our trip WhatsApp and I hadn't updated.

    Trip in early March

I'd recommend taking a connecting flight to Cali and staying at Araucana Lodge. Should be within your budget and is pretty luxury (Colombia hotels are pretty cheap). Some great birding round there. Montezuma would be an alternative option. Amazing birding but needs a 4x4. You can arrange pick...

    Tayrona NP and Flamingo Sanctuary

    1. You can drive inside the park but it is not a great place to go birding. It gets very busy and birds are elusive. Las Gaviotas road c20km east of the park is better. 2. Most birding is accessed from Camarones village. There are several guides that operate in the area and they can arrange...

Ghana with Ashanti - November 2024

Yes, an excellent trip. The most lifers I have had on a single trip since the pandemic. Certainly an advantage to visit a new part of the world!

Ghana with Ashanti - November 2024

There were other targets in Mole we missed, not least Standard-winged Nightjar (dipped), Spotted Creeper (better after the grass has been burnt apparently) and Pel's Fishing Owl (area they are was cut off by floods). 1 and a half days was not really enough!

Ghana with Ashanti - November 2024

We didn't get any of your targets in Mole! We saw a flyover Gosling's at Fufulso pond and we saw a female Wilson's in Kakum farmbush. We needed a lot longer than 2 days in Ankasa! Wydahs were in breeding plumage but all the ones we saw (not masses) were Exclamatory (or at least identified by us...

Ghana with Ashanti - November 2024

I've just got back from two weeks in Ghana with five friends. We used Ashanti and were pretty happy with them. I saw a total of 375 species with at least 20 more heard only plus around 20 species of mammals. I am not going to post a day by day account but here is my ebird trip report...

    South America: Where?

Hi Dan, I'd suggest the central Andes in Colombia. You could fly into Pereira, do a 3 or 4 night package at Montezuma, and then hire a car for c10 days taking in Manizales area and San Cipriano. Plenty of non-birding things on that route such as the thermal springs or hiking in Los Nevados...

Hello! Interested in Birding in Cali Colombia

We just did a day trip from Araucana due to concerns about insurance as in the Buenaventura city zone though we did spectacularly well, finding Berlepsch Tinamou and Thicket Antpitta.

Hello! Interested in Birding in Cali Colombia

If you want somewhere a bit nicer, Araucana Lodge about 25km north of Cali is stunning. They can arrange day trips including to the spectacular San Cipriano. Not the cheapest option but depends what you are after.

Green bird call - Sacred Valley, Peru

Thanks Avery. My friend reckons it was a Dusky-Green Oropendola.

    Aurora borealis/Northern Lights

Missed them in May but visible last night even with naked eye in London despite light pollution.

A one generation hobby…and a concern for the future

Please don't engage in stereotypes about young birders. Different young birders are different. Some twitch, some patch, some travel. When I was involved in Next Generation Birders (NGB), we had to put up with all sorts of nonsense about us all having rich parents, all being too soft as some...

A one generation hobby…and a concern for the future

I am 32 and there are now so many more young birders than when I was starting out plus social media makes it easier for them to connect. Any visit to Spurn and you will see regular groups and individuals in their early 20s. We had various initiatives, which for all their faults, moved the dial...

Green bird call - Sacred Valley, Peru

Hi all, A non-birding friend sent me the video of a bird he saw / heard in the Sacred Valley in Peru. Bird is not visible in video but you can hear it. He said it was quite big with a green belly.

    North Norfolk - September 2024

Very nice! Weather looks cracking for migrant arrivals from this Thursday onwards (though I fear a Friday night bunk with clear skies overnight). I'm going up this weekend to camp near Wells. Good migrant hunting spots include Burnham Overy Dunes, Wells Woods, Stiffkey Campsite Wood and...

2 days of stationary birding within 2-3hours from London (richmond/kew) early november

In November, I'd recommend going to the north Norfolk coast. Maybe stay near Titchwell. Maybe just over 3 hours from Richmond. Elmley waders tend to be pretty distant but they are usually closer at Oare Marshes but the good Kent sites are pretty spread out.

    Marrakesh Bird Guides?

I reckon you could find a lot by a taxi to Oukaimeden. The Crimson-winged Finch, Moussiers Redstarts and Horned Larks can be found walking uphill from the town. The desert specialities at Boulmane Dades are over a 5 hour drive away so probably not a realistic day trip.

Colombia Birding - Request for Help

I'm not sure this is required to be honest. Every week on the Facebook page Birding Travel, someone different advertises their idea to create a new app to connect birders with guides and they never seem to go anywhere as they carry little advantage over Google. I think it is relatively easy...

    England next April

It depends where in England you want to go. I've never heard of a company that covers the whole of England except on scheduled organised tours. However, there are plenty of operators in hotspot areas like Norfolk or Cornwall that probably can help you.

    British Columbia June 2024

Km 14. It took ages to get up there because of pouring rain and state of road.
