    Emarginations - questions

On your Chiffchaff photo, which is not ideal to judge, you can't see the outer two primary edges, but you can make out the emarginations which I have marked. B

    Emarginations - questions

Firstly, you need good photographs - side on - to accurately show the emarginations and their relative positions. Good photos will also show the length of p1 (short outer primary) relative to the primary coverts - and sometimes the length of p2 relative to the wing tip. It is not on all species...

On 2nd of September 2019 at Reiffel Bird Sanctuary, Vancouver, British Colombia : Stilt Sandpiper ?

A trio of warblers in Lisbon

He is saying that, but it is as you correctly suggest a Common Whitethroat. Juvenile Macronyx sp., 27 aug 2024 Masai Mara, Kenya

It is a longclaw (breadth of base of bill and look at those legs! etc...), but juvenile Pangani or Yellow-throated? Of the two, Pangani is most likely to have the streaking on undertail coverts, so I would say that. Brian

    Id Help - Mumbai, India - 6

data from 'Terns of Europe and N America', Olsen and Larsson hirundo - males 39.8; females 35.7 longipennis - males 35.2; females 33.5 tibetana - males 33.8; females 32.2 'very short' is still an exaggeration to me, but tibetana is indeed notably shorter in averaging 6mm (c 15%) shorter

A slight exaggeration Valery - perhaps 2-3mm on average?

    Which Willet? - Pennsylvania

Hopefully someone will correct me if I am wrong, but the ages of the two birds are different. The photos are not great, but one is a worn and moulting adult (with stronger barring on the coverts/scaps); the other is a worn, faded juvenile (the more uniform, paler bird, with markings seemingly...
