    6 weeks in Australia - December 2023/January 2024

For some reason, the order of photos in the mammal & reptile posts has sorted itself so it doesn't match the list I put in the post, and I don't appear to be able to edit those any more!!

    6 weeks in Australia - December 2023/January 2024

Sydney was Jayne, Tasha & I being tourists for a day or so before we moved Tasha into her accommodation at Maquarie University where she was staying for 6 months on a placement from Plymouth. We did go on a tourist trip with Perfect Days Sydney which had a few bits of wildlife spotting. We...

    6 weeks in Australia - December 2023/January 2024

14th January to 20th January – This part of the trip nearly didn’t happen. In our plan, this stage of the trip was to drive up the coast from Airlie Beach to Cairns. Unfortunately, just before we arrived in Australia, Cairns and Far North Queensland was battered by a cyclone, causing widespread...

    6 weeks in Australia - December 2023/January 2024

2 January to 5 January – O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat. This was a place I’d found when doing some trip research with the aim of photographing a male Regent Bowerbird. Never got the photo I wanted, but did see a few & one landed on our villa balcony while I was doing so macro stuff, so had the...

    6 weeks in Australia - December 2023/January 2024

Itinerary I’ll detail below the trip highlights. All the bird listings can be found at the end where I’ve linked to my eBird trip reports. 17 December – 27 December – Stayed with Jayne’s cousin, Gwen, and her family in Dakabin which is a suburb in north Brisbane. I had a list in my head...

    6 weeks in Australia - December 2023/January 2024

It's only taken me 12 months, and I haven't done a major trip report for the forums before. However, having seen Paul's report on his trip which happened just before mine, and seen the use of eBird trip reports I thought I'd give it a go :) Firstly, this wasn’t a birding specific holiday, more...

    Australia - October/November 2024

I spent 6 weeks in Queensland over December 2023/January 2024, so to add to Mark's comments I'd agree 5 nights in O'Reilly's is possibly too much (we spent 3 nights there & saw the majority of what we wanted to). Agree a trip to Michaelmas Cay is a must - only 2 boats go there (we went with...

    Australia - Brisbane, Sydney to Melbourne & Tasmania - 12th to 29th November 2023

Thanks Paul - you've just given me the inspiration I needed to do a report on my own 6 week trip to Brisbane which took place not many weeks after you were there.

    New York - December

A few photos from what was just a casual walk around Central Park - thanks for all the pointers, had a great week in the city.

    New York - December

Was that a bit of a rarity for the Park area? Love my BoP so seeing the owl was a bonus to the other 3 raptors I saw the same day - Red-tailed Hawk, Merlin & a distant Bald Eagle.

    New York - December

Just back today. Had some decent walks round Central Park with quite a few new ticks. Really pleased to get decent views of American Robin amongst.others & was grateful to the group of birders who kindly pointed out a Great Horned Owl which I would never have found myself.

    New York - December

My wife & I are spending a week in New York, staying on 49th West Street, for the first week in December (I think that puts us in walking distance to Central Park) It's primarily for a big birthday for her, but it would be rude not to partake in at least some casual birding whilst we're there...

    same quest, new question: which to pick? 2nd hand 7dm2 + EF 100-400 mk2 OR R7 + EF 100-400 mk1

Yup, upgraded spotting scope will be my next major optics purchase next year.

    same quest, new question: which to pick? 2nd hand 7dm2 + EF 100-400 mk2 OR R7 + EF 100-400 mk1

I'm still using the 7D2 along with a (new to me) 100-400 mk2, and I'm really liking this combination. I can't justify moving to the R7 for the sake of it just yet, and probably won't until my 7D2 takes it's last frame.

    Eastern Australia birding information

I spent 6 weeks in Brisbane/Cairns/Whitsundays over Christmas & New Year just gone. While it wasn't a birding holiday as such (more a family trip) we still found some great birds. My son was doing his Masters in Brisbane so had already been there 6 months & had done a lot of site research ahead...

    Brisbane Birding Groups

See my thread further down this part of the forum. There was at least one Brisbane based guide who posted in there. Just back from Brisbane myself (similar timeframe too) & can say you will not be disappointed

    A couple of Scythebill problems

Related to the Mammal Watching list, is there any way of adding mammals to it to record? I've just come back from Australia, and spent a few days on K'gari where there are pure-breed Dingos - when I go to record Dingo in the sightings I only get the option of recording "Domestic Dog"

Exploring Sydney - and further afield.

Just got back from Sydney but didn't have much chance to bird in the area as we were settling our daughter into accommodation at MacQuarie University. We did however go out for one day with a guide to Kangaroo Valley for an evening with Wombats. Bonus Red-bellied Black snake at Carrington Falls...
