Chinese or Hainan Blue Flycather female Wat Tham Prathum Chon Buri Thailand 28/12/24

Hi, I would have thought Chinese blue, based on the dull rufous tail and the "orangish" eye ring. Tough to distinguish between the two so perhaps I am missing something. steve

Doi Inthanon NP Thailand - Plumbeous Water Redstart or ...?

I would agree. I think the white on the upper tail is a good marker, along with the breast and overall colour and bill. And location is right. Nice photo. steve

Doi Inthanon NP Thailand - a kind of Minivet or ... ?

I was thinking a female Long-tailed Minivet based on the grey of the chin and demarcation with the neck. But not surprised if corrected:) steve

Doi Inthannon NP - Scarlet Minivet ?

The second two photos I think are of a long-tailed minivet, based on the shape of the black intrusion into the red wing feathers. and the rather long tail. Not sure of the bird in the first two photos, it is a different bird isn't it? steve

Wader id help, Baghdad, December 18

The attached (albeit rather shoddy) photos show, I uncertainly think: 9940 and 9942: Common greenshank, based on long, greenish legs, white curve by wing, and long and slightly upturned bill? 1fa1 and 1f94: Common greenshank in the back and Common redshank in the foreground? Photos taken Dec...

ID help on wader in Baghdad

Wonderful, thank you very much:) May I ask is it a young one by chance - the apparent (or is it an artifact of the camera) white breast had me doubting that as the eBird photos all seemed to show a greyish underparts. thank you, very much appreciated, especially as this is a first for me. steve

ID help on wader in Baghdad

Hello, is it possible to ID the bird in the attached photos, notwithstanding their poor quality? All comments and suggestions gratefully acknowledged. I had initially thought it was a Green Sandpiper but the apparent "stripes" by the wing and it bulkiness make me think it is not. But no idea...

Thank you for looking further Joern and Alex, I unfortunately do not have any other photos of these ducks. Lesson learned, take more photos:). Ducking in Baghdad, ID help please

Thank you very much. Yes not a good photo and I don't have any others of that one. Thank you for the confirmation and the correction. Its an interesting little marsh, with little grebe, swamphen, coots and moorhen and cattle egret occasionally. I won't count the Garganey then but will keep a...

Ducking in Baghdad, ID help please

My apartment overlooks a small marsh that occupies a corner of the old, abandoned airport in the center of Baghdad, Iraq. The photos have been taken on various days in October and November. My "guesses" are: photos: 1f13 & 9531 are of Ferruginous Ducks? This would be a lifer. Maybe there are...

Are these brown-throated sunbirds? - Vietnam

Hi, I believe the first photo is female Ornate Sunbird, the second is a quite young bird if I am interpreting the bill and gape correctly. The bill size looks like it could be a ruby-cheeked sunbird but possibly also brown-throated. The last might be von Hasselet's or ornate. Location - north or...

    Fraser Hill Malaysia May 18

@49bentley Re guides and expenses: What I have found most helpful is looking at the top birders on e-bird for the country I am in and contacting one of the many locals that mention they are guides for that purpose. I have done this in Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia and Nepal, with a great...

juvenile Brown-throated Sunbird Paya Indah Wetlands Malaysia May 02

Indobirder makes a good point. Interesting. I wonder if it is a very young ornate sunbird, which is the only one I can find with the orangish throat and long bill. But even though they breed around my place I don't think I have seen one quite this young. I hope someone with more expertise than...

    which warbler?

Hi Kanger, re the question about location, I believe the participants on here are looking for something fairly general; for BC s something along the lines of Gulf Islands, Cariboo, Lower Mainland, east of Ossoyoos (sp?), Dawson Creek etc. And often times the environment, such as semi-desert...

juvenile Brown-throated Sunbird Paya Indah Wetlands Malaysia May 02

I think a female ruby-cheeked sunbird with that orange throat, though it is not that extensive. Likely someone with more expertise in the area will comment though"_ steve
