Always found the Naze hopeless for seawatching. Much better in my opinion is Holland Haven, they've even got a shelter. Phil

Unfortunately not. I did get a call from Andy Field to tell me they'd be seen heading upriver but I was unable to get there for an hour. Didn't stop me getting a surprise patch tick though as I had a Water Rail running along the path on the Wivenhoe Trail! Happy days.B (: Phil

Agree flushing usually does result in poor and very frustrating views so I can heartily recommend flushing Corncrakes as they don't seem to fly very well. How they make it to Africa and back is beyond me! 8-P Did have another look this morning but no luck. At least 1 Whinchat and Spotshank being...

Cheers Stewart. No, that took me by complete surprise(actually felt in a state of shock afterwards). Views were excellent, if brief, as it flew low back to the stand of dead umbellifers I'd just passed. It seemed to drop back down no more than 30yds away but if you recall what the vegetation is...

Tbh, I'd probably be more interested in hearing the Blyth's than seeing it. Phil

Hi Stewart, Not so much as a sniff of one at the Hythe unfortunately....unless you count a Sedge Warbler that begins it's song by reeling for a few seconds...the little tease. Phil

I was told there were plans to drop water levels in the central section for the benefit of waders, late summer/early Autumn. How true this is remains to be seen. Phil

For all you naysayers, there is a photo in today's Colchester Gazette of the Trumpeter Swan in Dovercourt which validates 100% the claims of Boneys and Marsh Warbler. Such cynicism is most unbecoming. Phil

Also, heard something extremely Serin-like singing just off Abbot's Rd. Colchester this morning. Couldn't find the culprit though. Phil

Saw my first Swift of the year today, unfortunately being murdered by a Magpie. No idea how the Magpie caught it though. Bit of a sad way to go after flying all that way. But then again, it was Greenstead Estate, what did it expect? Phil

Not bad. No joy with the YBWs then? Phil

Glad someone was seeing stuff, everything seemed to be avoiding me. Admittedly, I did have single Redstart, Whinchat and a couple of Stonechats but, Mipits aside, the place seemed devoid of birds. As for warblers, I had 1 Willow, 2 Lesser Whitethroats and 4 Chiff Chaff. Flycatchers don't exist...

Plenty of the right coastal habitat at the Naze (too much in fact), but as far as I know, only two people looking yesterday. Suits me though. Was excellent there yesterday, with Wood Warbler, Redstart, Pied Fly and more Sylvias than you can shake a stick at! Phil

Having never been to Wallasea, I'm assuming the only directions needed are to follow Creeksea Ferry Road? Any other info would be gratefully received. Phil

Does make more sense, couldn't really reconcile those pale tipped coverts with the bird being an adult. Bit confusing text on that link re. eye colour but the pictures speak for themselves. Phil

I'd always thought iris colour to be age related rather than sex related. ie. darker in young birds, yellow in adult. I've been wrong before though. Phil

Had another go for Hawfinch at Gt.Braxted Park today and saw nothing, then went to Abberton and saw nothing there either. A good day. Phil
