I have to agree there have been some impressive flocks around the Seaton (Alab UK) tip in recent weeks, with some days flocks of probaly in excess of 2,000 birds easy. There have been some really big impressive flocks of Starlings well into the 1,000 plus swarming around the sky.

Where's best value for bird food at moment

Past couple of months I have been shopping at The Range. Sack of 20kg mixed seed £10.99. 20kg sack of peanuts £23.99? I think. This is a lot cheaper than what I was buying. For nyger seed, I have been using Wilkinsons a kilo bag for about £1.50- under £2.00 which seems good value.

I saw the Woodchat Shrike yesterday on the Headland after getting HMS Severn sailing in. Saw a chap (with toddler in pushchair) in the gardens pointing his camera to the bushes, so slowed down and stopped to have a look. A couple of minutes wait and it came about 10 foot away, got some nice...

Fruiteaters are going to live good this winter!

Over the past 4 to 6 weeks up in the Hartlepool/ Teesside area the berries and fruits have been so plentiful and large that the branches of trees were straining under the weight. There is some truth to the good crop of berries= a bad winter. Over the past 20 years, I have been keeping a...

    Starlings Everywhere

I think I had a flock of between 50-100 Starlings decend on my garden earlier this week. For me they were about 2-3 weeks late, than what they were last year when they decended on my garden en mass.

    Long-tailed Tit's Bad Choice

About 2 years ago, I had a very nice looking cat visit the garden. When I'd first seen it, I thought its going after the birds. But no, birds were walking around on the deck in front of it all the time, never once did I see it go after the birds. So maybe some cats are alright with birds (but...

    Long-tailed Tit's Bad Choice

http://www.flickr.com/photos/10751420@N07/2540715712/ Is that the style of bush, in the picture (link)? If so I wouldn't worry about the birds nesting. As if it is well (tight) branched they will be safe from cats. I wouldn't try to influence/ disturb the flow of nature.
