Comment by 'HouseCrow' in media 'Oriental Honey Buzzard'

Would it not be wise to add Eastern or Oriental to the species name? Admittedly, it can be just my benign jealousy speaking here ; ) cheers, Gerben

Turtle 2 looks most like Chinese Softshell Turtle (Pelodiscus sinensis) cheers, Gerben

Dolphin???? Kumamoto Port, Japan in October

Hi Debbie, could you maybe upload your spider and dolphins to inaturalist. I think you will get an answer there most of the times. I started using that site as my first uploading site a few years ago and it works sort off a treat, for most species groups anyway. my records there: Observations...

    Osaka, Japan - Snipe query

Haha, yes, unless you have the cleanest of views, it might be very, very, very hard to ID them anyway.... Heathaze in some form will add to that difficulty... Have a splendid time there though. I think the low number of records is more an indication of the low ebird user count in the area. For...

    Osaka, Japan - Snipe query

Of course, i hope for you it is one of the other options. Will have a go at them again tonight, but i fear i just don't see it unless it is overly obvious. edit: I tried again and failed miserably. The tail appears a bit short, the thick spot before the eye is pro 'Swintail', the paler head...

    Osaka, Japan - Snipe query

Looks common snipeish to me, but i'm no expert and they are notoriously difficult as you are most probably well aware. Cheers G

    Greater or Lesser??

Please mention the general area, the country and the date of the observation when you start a thread. Also lesser greater could apply to quite a few species. signing your posts is generally considered the kind way to address people here... enough with the lectures...welcome to birdforum and...

woods and trees: what would panel think of this (only partly visible) individual hybrid black goose? Bantpolder, Lauwersmeer NL | 17/12/2025

I did not mean to cause confusion, of course. The amount of feral or semi-feral Canada-type geese in the Netherlands is substantial. Keeping track of the smaller Cackling hybrids might be doable and useful. I meant that I had a romantic wish that maybe this was offspring of a genuine vagrant...

woods and trees: what would panel think of this (only partly visible) individual hybrid black goose? Bantpolder, Lauwersmeer NL | 17/12/2025

Thanks all for your replies. After posting my starter, I understood that the ID was not that difficult or ambiguous. It's a mix of both taxa, at least, where the mix meter position is not entirely clear: most elements of Barnacle and a few distinct ones belong to Hutchinsii. The absence of...

woods and trees: what would panel think of this (only partly visible) individual hybrid black goose? Bantpolder, Lauwersmeer NL | 17/12/2025

After reading endless discussions about the occurrence of Hutchinsii in the Netherlands...years ago... I was fed up with the issue and did not bother to look at any Canadas anymore. But now, some 20 years after my interest died down, this one popped up in a regular Barnacle Geese wintering spot...

    Gull from Japan. ID needed

Sure, it looks too dark, but the photo is too dark on the whole so maybe that justifies the colours of the gull itself. This one has a lighter iris too: https://www.gull-research.org/glaucescens/glaucous01/JC 3012 Glaucous-winged 1984.jpg Mind, I am not saying it is a GwG but without the grade...

    Gull from Japan. ID needed

What makes 4 more likely a hybrid? Bill spots, mottling and overall spots look ok for (slightly delayed moult?) adult winter Gwinged to me. What am I overlooking or interpreting wrong? cheers, Gerben

    Which Merganser Japan

: ) I was verifying an old Red-breasted Merganser record on jp.observation.org and was looking for proper distinguishing features between the three species. Hence my checking your thread and ending the session reading your last post which gave me a giggle of recognition. Sorry if i raked up old...

Himalayan Cuckoo or Oriental Cuckoo ? Singapore

I'm happy to hear it, but I think the Cuckoos are notoriously hard to separate in the field without calls or song. I have posted a few questions about Japanese cuckoos over the years -none with clear frontal photos like yours. Indian Cuckoo is another option I would think, but I doubt you will...

North-West, UK. Buzzard, but which one?

It is a Common Buzzard, Rough legged does look quite a bit different, most of the time anyway. Young Buzzards often show a pattern like this, see also: cheers, G

Quick Tips on Differentiating Corvids in Japan

Nice shot of the Large-billed head profiles. You may be right about the field corvids... I need to look at the saddles again, as it is not mentioned on sites (not the ones I have seen) it is probably not a thing. And yes they are the same bird, I did not quite get the 'I don't know' at...

Quick Tips on Differentiating Corvids in Japan

thanks for joining me here At Inaturalist I see no clear difference in head shape for the subspecies...yet interesting point. The birds in the field are all Large-billed you think? Juveniles and the odd Carrion Crow among these may make it impossible to ID them all to a tee...perhaps Photos 6...

Quick Tips on Differentiating Corvids in Japan

Pardon the late reopening of this case, but it remains an interesting thing to work at...both in the field and at home, working out id's of tens of birds on either inaturalist or jp.observation.org. When the difference is obvious, it is not hard at all to decide between Rook, Carrion Crow and...

What species are these - Vietnam

Could you be a bit more specific with a month and region at least? In some cases that makes a ton of difference... Bird one looks like an Oriental Honey Buzzard to me, but I have little knowledge of Vietnamese options. Could bird two be a molting Black Eagle? cheers Gerben

    Hokkaido. Bush warbler

A juvenile bird. I would bet Oriental Reed Warbler, but I have no experience with them other than singing males in spring. The strong two-coloured bill should be helpful for a positive ID. cheers, Gerben

    Hokkaido. Plover

Location too of course is a bit tricky, the eyering is usually more prominent in Little Ringed Plover. That species is also smaller and more compact...usually. cheers G
