My personal bird taxonomic checklist project

Hmm, the Richmond Index has Urogalba listed as a nomen nudum. What would the type species be, please?

    Taxonomy in-flux updates

Ah, that it explains it. I only found the early version of the paper online, so I was looking at the tree that used the chimaera sequence (& subsequent placement).

Heh, and to think I remember my ornithology professor in the mid-cough's proclaiming that the world list would surely never cross 10,000 species. I was dubious of the statement even then.

Yet another thread on eponyms... But this one might actually be fun!

TL;DR: Why yuck someone's yum? Available as of the date of publication of that article just under a year ago, certainly. However, I count over 100 of those that are neologisms (either via translation from another language, or from the scientific name) in that publication. I do not think this...

    Tyrannides

I will once again strongly disagree with any suggestion to apply a common name from a broader species concept to a narrower post-split concept. 'Southern Beardless-Tyrannulet' - no one knows if this means the pre-split formulation of that taxon or the post-split except the speaker/writer. It...

I do not think that is correct. That's not what is in the chart from the paper I linked, which seems to be the source of the changes. L. superba is now Vogelkop. That is quite clear from reading through the two Elliott papers. They spell out that superba was the traditional name for birds from...

OK. Hmm. It's odd that they cite the reason for the change as based Ah, ok, I see what I did. Here is the revised taxonomy. This matches what Elliott et al. (2022) have in their chart of the name changes: L. minor - unchanged southeastern peninsula form L. niedda of Irestedt et al. (2017) =>...

OK, so which Lophorinas are where now? I'm completely lost, & have no idea which I've seen in the Mt. Hagen area. Huzzah for nomenclatural stability. >/ What I had: L. minor, Lesser Lophorina - southeastern form L. niedda, Crescent-caped Lophorina - Vogelkop area L. superba, Greater Lophorina...

Hmm. My notes have the Giant-Honeyeaters w/ viridis as Chattering and brunneirostris as Duetting. So which does brunneirostris do - chatter or duet? o_0

As an American who has no dog grouse in this fight, I quite like the term 'Celtic Isles' that someone used.

    Hirundinidae

Ah-ha, so I was correct - in saying that I might've missed something! :D Thank you. I had only looked at the chronogram, which doesn't show striolata (presumably due to some difference in the samples used).

    Hirundinidae

I don't see Striated sampled here, although I may have missed it. How are we to draw any conclusions about its status from this study?

    Field guides on color e-readers?

With the new generation of color e-readers upgrading to the new Kaleido 3 technology, has anyone had a chance to see how an ebook or pdf field guide looks on them? I'm considering purchasing a color e-reader IF it would allow me to convert my field guide collection to digital & still get the ID...

Petition for a dedicated sub-sub forum for eponymous name rants

Could we please move all eponymous name rants to their own dedicated sub-(sub-) forum? It has become impossible to discuss any taxonomic or nomenclatural topic without a derailment into that issue. I'm ready to abandon the entire site over the whole stinking mess.

I didn't download anything; I followed the links from their main page (IOC World Bird List – Version 13.1) > Classification > Family Index > any of the families (e.g. Cisticolidae leads here Grassbirds, Donacobius, tetrakas, cisticolas, allies – IOC World Bird List) There we find no genus or...

Time calibration and Linnean ranks in birds

One point which interest me IS exactly what to do with fossil forms. Are we looking at ranks simply as 'this split occurred at this time period of our planet's history'? Or are we thinking more 'this split is this old'? The difference is that, if a clade diverged in the Paleocene but only...

Time calibration and Linnean ranks in birds

On the contrary, I would argue this shows that using objective criteria produces different results than using subjective criteria such as 'similarity' (to the human eye). Which criteria are preferred is another question entirely.
