    Phyllos or Hippolais? (Serbia)

Interesting warbler in my garden today. Unfortunately heavily cropped but the shape alone is saying Hippolas with its upright stance, high crown and angled nape, while the eyeline and eyebrow say Phyllos. What do you think?

    Eastern type Chiffchaff

Not my bird but seen in the Zagreb area in Croatia on 20/02/2023. My first thought was tristis but I can see hardly any green colouration. With a white supercillium, white throat and overall grey brown colouration it seems closer to sidianus or lorenzii? Any thoughts much appreciated.

Hi Paul, love the photos. Where are you? I'm an artist and took the liberty of downloading your med pic. Should of asked you first?

    Slightly Interesting Chiffchaff

Ooohh that's a dangerous game. I really do worry when people start messing with the original. A slippery slope for sure

    Slightly Interesting Chiffchaff

Interesting, I'm currently looking at one of these which arrived in my garden in Serbia last month. Your bird also has the yellow in the supercillium which should run fron just behind the eye to the bill. I've never seen a collybita that looks like your bird. Your bird seems to lack any brown in...

    Iberian Chiffchaff?

Hi folks and Happy New year. Last month on the 8th of last month I was fortunate enough to have my first wintering Chiffchaff for my garden here in Serbia. Initially I noticed it wasn't a typical collybita type, lacking a distinctive eyering and the dark ear coverts which often enhance them. It...

    Juv Honey buzzard?

Your photos show an adult L. L. B. which has a black trailing band to the underwing and dark carpal patches niether of which my photos show?
  13. Geoff WORCS

    Juv Honey buzzard?

Yes. Im dropping the idea that it might be Bonelli's after comments in that thread.

    Juv Honey buzzard?

Initially thought this was Common buzzard but after checking the photos im now sure its something else. Lacking either the breast band or pale inner wing bar of C. buzzard one of which i would expect to see even on dark morphs. Third photo is foreshortened but still shows i believe the broader...

    Buzzard or Bonelli's?

Thanks Alexander i did not consider Honey buzzard. I think you may be correct. And yes i will also post in id forum. Thanks again much appreciated.

Thats interesting but what makes you say that?

    Buzzard or Bonelli's?

I saw this bird over a coastal mountain at Petrovac, Montenegro two days ago. It was at considerable height and i initially thought it was common buzzard. Only had time for a couple of shots before it dissapeared. After reviewing this photo im no longer convinced of its identity. I cant see the...

    Woodchat or Masked shrike. Montenegro

Thanks Brian, yes ive looked at the checklist but checklists dont negate the possibility of rare species occurance. Especially in a country like Montenegro which as a tiny birding population and as far as i can tell an equally small number of visiting birders.

    Woodchat or Masked shrike. Montenegro

Thanks s MJB, i was wondering about the undertail coverts but could find no reference. Thats very helpful. Of course ive been erring on the Woodchat side as Masked is as yet unrecorded in Montenegro, but it does seem a very grey bird with little of the warmer tones expected for Woodchat...

    Woodchat or Masked shrike. Montenegro

Im very familiar with the collins guide and believe me its well respected by me too. That i think is subjective. Bear in mind this bird is not side on therefore there will be some forshortning of the tail. Masked shrikes inhabit hot climates and therefore rarely show a puffed out stocky...

    Woodchat or Masked shrike. Montenegro

thanks Niels i take it that isnt a definitive answer because i can hardly be expected to believe in your belief in an app? Can you elaborate after all with such difficult species some idea how you or the app came to that conclusion would be useful dont you agree?
