Comment by 'JapanJames' in media 'Japanese bush warbler'

I think you mean more often heard than seen. And yes; pretty much everyone in Japan would be familiar with the singing of this bird, either from having heard it directly (most people), or if they're a city-dweller who never makes it out of the city, they would have still heard it on TV. The...

  8. Blue rock thrush

    Blue rock thrush

It was already very dark, after 5:30, but this guy held still in his spot under a bridge for long enough for me to get a decent shot. Took the shutter speed way down and leaned against a railing.
  9. Warbling white eye

    Warbling white eye

Been seeing more and more of these in Hakata lately.
  10. Blue rock thrush

    Blue rock thrush

Was on the way home from my birding stroll, maybe 5pm, getting a bit dark. Bird was perched on a high branch of a tree by the side of the river in the canal next to where I was walking, slightly below me and maybe 5 meters away.

Comment by 'JapanJames' in media 'Brown-eared bulbul'

Thanks so much for the kind words, Gregg! This is an incredibly common bird where I live; right up there with the sparrows, pigeons, and crows. The setting was unusual however, so I'm glad I took the pic.

    Bull-headed shrike

I've seen this same female bull-headed shrike over in this area a few times before. Thought the perch on the chain and the light were interesting.

    Ashy minivet? Fukuoka, Japan

I took these photos from a somewhat unfortunate angle, but it was the only chance I had. The bird was in the canopy above me in a shrine on Shikanoshima island, Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan. From the longist tail I at first thought it was Long-tailed tit, but the beak feels too large and robust...

    Grey wagtail? Fukuoka, Japan

You've been very clear given the confusing nature of the subject. Thank you very much for the detailed explanations in both of your posts!

    Grey wagtail? Fukuoka, Japan

Thank you, John! That species isn't present in any of my Japanese bird guides. The Japanese name, ツメナガセキレイ, references the long back toe claw, and looking at this photo it does indeed look quite long. Many pictures online seem to show it looking much more yellow but I suppose that's the summer...

    Grey wagtail? Fukuoka, Japan

The colors are a bit less vibrant than I'm used to for grey wagtails, but grey wagtail is still my assumption, based on the location and presence of another more obvious example of a grey wagtail nearby. A young bird maybe? Would appreciate anything anyone can share! James
  21. Japanese tit

    Japanese tit

I liked how the bird's angle matched that of the branches in this shot.
  22. Eastern yellow wagtail

    Eastern yellow wagtail

Really bad light on this day, but I tried out a new monopod setup that let me take what is probably still the best picture I've taken so far of a grey wagtail. They're skittish, very small, and fairly uncommon, so I haven't had too much luck in the past. (EDIT: Thanks to members Tote and...
