This image of a bird was shot as well in PN Carara, Puntarenas/ Costa Rica on 16th of January

Big eye & stout bill - reminds me of an antvireo

Great to have you on board in Morocco. Hope to see you again soon

    Gull - Hampshire, Britain

Caspian Gull remains very scarce in Hampshire, but probably underreported. I can suggest you look at the website pages on gull-research.org that shows the detail for each age group of each species

Thekla or Crested Larks - Morocco 26/02

Could be, but everything about 14 looks Thekla to me. Especially based on location. Crested is not a common bird around Boulmane. Limited to the agricultural strip along the Dades and a few sandy areas. Thekla is very common. Some birds are very difficult to tell apart and photos are tricky...

Thekla or Crested Larks - Morocco 26/02

At the moment, all seem to me to be Thekla Lark. All of the lower mandibles seem to have a convex lower edge. Bird 1 is the only one I am hesitating over. Plumage details are complicated in this area as there are two subspecies of each common there, and another Thekla SSP in winter Song...

Corvid in the mountains of Tajikistan

Have to admit that it is hard to imagine an angle more difficult to tell which of the two species it is. However I would go for Crow. Relatively short and broad wings without the long hand expected of Raven Outer rectrices seem long, and even with the rest of the tail, so no 'diamond' shape...

    Sinharaja, Sri Lanka

I agree with the first. The other lizard looks like the SL Kangaroo lizard. I struggled with the snakes. Saw Kukri and the Bronzeback but found distinguishing them tricky.

    Siberian Pipit (?) from Pakistan

I am very confused by these two photos. You say that they are of the same bird, yet they do not look as though they are. The first is so strongly marked and so contrasty that Siberian came to mind but bits aren't right. The second photo shows a bird that I would consider to be a Water Pipit...

Owl? In Kilim Geoforest Park, Langkawi.

Certainly a Scops Owl and as eBird only has Oriental Scops from that location I guess that it what they were. As for colour rendition, the combination of intense light and dark shade seems to confuse all digital cameras and phone cameras more than many. Remember all images are manipulated by...

Need ID Common Snipe or African Snipe from Ethiopia

On distribution and the dark/light approach then the answer has to be probably. Certainly I have seen African on Sanetti and Common in the Rift and not the other way around.

    Might this be a Godwit?

Has all the features of Greater Yellowlegs (except the legs being underwater!)

Need ID Common Snipe or African Snipe from Ethiopia

Not going to be much use. Never seen African Snipe in the rift valley lakes. I had always been told they were an altitude species and have seen them in the Bale Mountains. The scapulars should be dark, with minimal fringing between the 'braces'. This one seems well patterned. In that basis...

Raptor - Haputale - Sri Lanka

I agree. The broad sub-terminal band on the tail plus the small head surely fit OHB best

    Mountain chiffchaff? Gilan. Iran lately.

Obviously a Chiffchaff, but the apparent brown tinge to the plumage is strange. I agree this is often the base colour of the 'Caucasian' Mountain Chiffchaffs. However all the MCs I have seen have a very strong supercilium in front of the eye and meeting over the bill. These don't appear to have...

Gulls in southern Tajikistan last week

This attunes with my thoughts. In addition I understand that hybrid pairs have been found in Eastern Kazakhstan, just north of here,. This complicates the matter

    Oxyura species, UK, 04.02.25

As Paul says, there is an open licence in place, but as I understand it virtually none have been shot in the UK. There is still a self draining population in France - estimated as 20-30 birds. Apparently sure to the expansion of the WHD population, e risk of hybridisation has increased despite...

Indian pond or squacco heron? Qeshm, persian gulf

For me, looks like a Squacco, but always very difficult. The bare parts on the lores don't seem bright enough, the bill doesnt seemas dark tipped as I would expect, and the base colour of the breast stroking looks too warm and the darker colour not dark enough. However the pair are extremely...

    Tajikistan Black-throated or Red-throated or Naumann's Thrush?

I have looked at this and tried to find other birds that match. The dark lores are a good indication of being BT or RT rather than Naumann's (although not as dark as adult birds) and to me the flanks are streaked rather than the scales I would expect on Naumann's. I suspect the angle is...

not Greater Hoopoe-lark -- or I am being difficult

Quite often find Hoopoe larks up to around 1500m in North Africa - not sure if that means anything though

not Greater Hoopoe-lark -- or I am being difficult

The local subspecies of LBP is arabicus and I have only seen them on rocky mountain slopes and not in the habitat seen here. IMHO, it would need to be a very long-billed pipit to match. The pipit bill length from forehead to bill tip is roughly equivalent to bill base to eye (at the forehead)...

not Greater Hoopoe-lark -- or I am being difficult

Cant see anything other than Greater Hoopoe Lark. Looks odd in the photo due to the heavy shade and the darkening of the image.

    2025 Birding Goals

Given up with nets, seen too many damaged odonata, even decapitated ones, by people wielding nets. Photo them now

Splitting of Cory's Shearwater and Scopoli's Shearwater

Agreed, all very surprising. However consistent if you read the Israeli rarities reports or look at the photos. Apparently there are no records of Mediterranean birds 'jumping' the Negev from the Med to the Red Sea.

Splitting of Cory's Shearwater and Scopoli's Shearwater

Most of the Eilat Records are actually Cory's and thats what these look like. I don't know of any fall proof ways of ID Scopoli's except from the underwing pattern- be interested if anyone else can help. The Hatteras bird looks possibly to be Scopoli's (& perhaps the Florida bird as well)...
