    Pete I know what you mean it does become personal when it is happening to birds you know. Certainly one of our birds which died last year was one known to me as I had monitored it's nest for a couple of years.     Thanks for this Keith I had seen this on twitter so it has been added to the Friends of Red Kites database of sightings. there was another sighting of a single kite over Wynyard on the same day. It could have been one of your pair. As you say it is a rare sighting for Cleveland.

    They are still not spreading much from their core area along the Derwent valley I am surprised myself that more are not seen in the area you have mentioned it's only a little jump across the river. We rarely get them in Durham either which is also surprising.

    We have known about these three birds for a while and they were killed before the breeding season. We have just had to wait a while before putting the information out to the public

    No the nests I saw looked more like natural predation either other birds or maybe squirrels.

    It has certainly been frustrating and depressing for all involved in the monitoring. I have been to nests where I have seen chicks then returned to find them dead or with no activity around the nests indicating late failure. It does seem to be a national problem this year so hopefully next year...

    It has not been a good season at all with failed nests and some deaths of chicks. We think this will be down to the damp cold weather at the critical breeding time. Other parts of the country have experienced similar poor breeding seasons. A full report will appear in the Friends of Red Kites...

    Mick apparently Harold has seen him I think on Thursday flying and "playing with a friend" sounds hopeful. You might be right, time may well sort him out.
