  1. Eared Grebe

    Eared Grebe

Several of these were out trying to make a living but this is the only one I could approach closely enough for an acceptable image.
  2. Barn Owl

    Barn Owl

I had to come back a second day to get an acceptable photo of this perching male. The first day I found it, sleeping in a recessed area of a tall palm, it had its back to the outside and all I could see was a splash of brown feathers in the drabber surroundings of the palm fronds.
  3. Little Blue Heron

    Little Blue Heron

This beautiful bird was feeding for quite a long time while I was nearby but I could never get an angle where I had a more photogenic backdrop.
  4. Yellow-rumped Warbler

    Yellow-rumped Warbler

I only had a moment before he/she flew away.

I never tire of seeing and photographing these elegant, graceful birds.
  8. Green-winged Teal

    Green-winged Teal

This is a common species but, somehow, the first photograph I've ever gotten of one.

  10. White-crowned Sparrow (I think)

    White-crowned Sparrow (I think)

I had trouble deciding which species this bird was with upside down feeded pose. I was leaning toward Chipping sparrow but some one more knowledgeable than I thinks White-crowned. In any event, it cared a lot more about getting nectar than about my proximity.
  11. Western Meadowlark

    Western Meadowlark

These birds are profuse in the reserve but often too far away for a good photo. To paraphrase an old movie, "The hills are alive with the sound of meadowlarks".

  13. Coyote on the hunt

    Coyote on the hunt

I watched this young coyote stalk and finally capture one of the myriad of prairie dogs that live in this reserve.
  14. Juvie red-Tailed Hawk

    Juvie red-Tailed Hawk

I watched and made images of this young bird for about ten minutes as it oved from a fence line toward me and finally posed at the top of this pole.
  15. Vermillion Flycatcher

    Vermillion Flycatcher

This little guy flitted around me from branch to branch for several minutes then landed on this bridge rail and posed for me.

    Yellow-rumped Warbler

Found in the Sweetwater Wildlife Refuge (an ironic name since this series of ponds is a sewage treatment facility) near Tucson.
