That could be the effect of aggressive NR so if you haven't set it up yet, dial it to -2 (lowest) and Sharpness to 0. -

AF speed and writing speed and zoom in and out, Hs50 is a lot faster if not quicker than any motoyrized superzoom. -

Being one of the pioneers (if not the first) to discover the telemacro trick in HS cam to get the max magnification at safer distance for insect, I am quite disappointed that it no longer works for HS50. With HS10 to HS30, you can focus at less than 6 inches using 150mm EFL whereas with HS50 you... -

If you really need to ID and just take a shot of the bird because it is too far away, enable Intelligent zoom. Only caveat is less IQ at 50-100% crop and no RAW. -

Location of focus box, yes but size, no. The smallest size you can use is AF-Center. With HS50's long zoom, you don't need tiny focus box unless it is a tiny dot on the LCD. HS50 focus is spot on, best I've experienced from a bridge cam. -

Effective Focal Length (EFL) = Actual Lens Focal Length x Crop Factor So HS50 has 185mm x 5.41 = 1000mm EFL. -

HS10 was the longest bridge cam @ 30X even before FZ100, no? FZ200 has a great bright lens but for real wildlife shooting, 600mm is not enough most of the time and motorize zoom is as slow as waiting for turtle to pop its head out. =D -

I always do if the critter is not flying or jumping. I can shoot at less than 1/100s @ 1000mm EFL. If you rely on fixed shutterspeed, you need to setup the ISO to Auto or manually adjust it and the EV to get the proper exposure. -

That is right. I would strongly suggest though to take advantage of the f/5.6 aperture on the long-end-zoom as much as possible because really there is very minimal difference in sharpness by stopping down the aperture. In the world of wildlife photography, you'll gonna need light and... -

You will have to conduct sharpness test using same subject at same light, same distance, same settings except aperture and shutterspeed of course and put the camera on a tripod with 10sec timer ON. Shoot multiple shots for each aperture then pick the best and compare. -

From my experience, stopping down the aperture on these pinhead sensor cams does very little to almost nil difference in sharpness plus it will only cause diffraction and you will get slow shutter speed unless the subject is under blazing sunlight. Setting the aperture to widest on A-Priority... -

Thanks a lot! Whoever said that HS50 has soft output is either fool or does not own the HS50.
