Request for information on thermal imagers.

The specification of such devices quote huge distances but I think that’s usually for a man-sized target (which seems odd as in the uk it’s generally illegal to shoot a man, even the unpleasant ones). The resolution does come into it as well - it’s terrible compared to even a cheap digital...

Request for information on thermal imagers.

I took mine on a nightjar walk and didn’t see any in the scope, just kind of fleeting views with bins)

Request for information on thermal imagers.

I’m in the uk, bought a HikMicro FQ50 and have been underwhelmed with what I’ve found. Going to nature reserves late at night, I can (just about) see roosting pigeon with the naked eye but see nothing meaningful with the scope. I stayed at an eco lodge (Suffolk, near Minsmere) and watched a...

    Night vision equipment for mortals

But in fairness Peter, it's probably a damn sight cheaper than a lot of the thermal cameras people are discussing on here. I reckon you just need to find its niche.

    Night vision equipment for mortals

Anyone have a recommendation (or otherwise) for an IR torch? I'm looking at these ones atm: Infrared Torch 940nm and 850nm options | Nightfox | UK

    Night vision equipment for mortals

I can confirm that's an owl. :-) Good job. I've got 3 baby tawny owls in the surrounding gardens, I've not found them with my FQ50 yet. I saw them clearly in daylight a few days ago but I didn't think to use the TI camera on them to see how they look in that.

@edenwatcher That photo of the woodcock is amazing. Can you give an indication as to roughly where that was taken (if you don't want to give specifics for whatever reason)?

    Night vision equipment for mortals

FWIW (and I know this is just a specific example), the Hik uses a standard 18650 battery rather than a battery pack. I picked up a couple of spare batteries (the FQ50 comes with 2 but eats them pretty quickly when tethered to phone) for ~£8 from a high street store.

    Night vision equipment for mortals

I bought a FQ50 recently. It has a zoom so FOV hasn't been an issue for me. In terms of finding owls, I've found absolutely nothing (here in the UK). I've been out in woods when it's very dark and nothing. I have come to the conclusion that their feathers are such good insulation, there's...

    Swarovski VPA on BTX

I’ve just received a VPA to use with my BTX. Unfortunately the multi-camera setup of my iPhone 13Pro means that the phone is not able to lock into the case. With most (?) new generation of mobile phones having multiple cameras, I think that the VPA needs a version2. I’ve had a look around and...

    Alternative to Swarovski tripod head

Sorry for the delay in replying- I somehow missed the email notification. Lots of great info here - thanks. Some of the equipment mentioned above doesn’t seem to be readily available here in the uk which is a shame; ideally I’d like to buy the bits all from a single outlet but that looks...

So a plate as per @Ignatius mentions or even the Swarovski balance rail?

    Alternative to Swarovski tripod head

Thanks @papasula , that’s great info, thanks. Looks good to me. Thanks Joachim; whilst I wouldn’t want to have to screw a foot/baseplate on each time, I guess once it’s screwed on I’d. or need to remove it. I’m buying new (really just because of availability and support) so it doesn’t look...

    Alternative to Swarovski tripod head

I’ve read various threads and pages about alternatives to the Swarovski head, most recently this page (which I didn’t want to derail): Swarovski ATS 80 25-50 W vs 20-60 vs ATX 85 so I get that the Swarovski is just a rebadged version and who doesn’t want to save a few quid (I’m looking at a BTX...

Fab; can you remember what sort of shutter speed you used? (“No” is a valid answer!)

Comment by 'Amadeus1756' in media 'Dobsonfly (female)'

Love this shot. I saw a male dobsonfly on the wall of the room I was staying in Costa Rica a few years ago - my initial reaction was “wth - I’m not going near that!”. I didn’t get anything like as good a photo as this one - love it. Thanks

    Sardinia- kingfisher at sea?

I’m in Sardinia and a few days ago at a lake saw a kingfisher - nice. Yesterday I was on a boat going past a cliff and my wife saw what she thought was a kingfisher; this was flying between rocks in the sea. I was surprised- I thought they’d be found near fresh water rather than salt. So, is...

    Hi from Reading, UK

Thanks all; I’ve rummaged around the forums (still plenty more rummaging to do - it’s very easy to go down a rabbit hole!) and it’s obvious there’s a lot of very knowledgeable and gracious people here. I’m gonna learn a lot. Rgds
