Confused which camera body with 500PF

There have been rumours because B&H mistakenly said it was discontinued. Do you have some more reliable indication?

I don't use NX Studio, but you might find it worthwhile joining one of the Nikon School courses such as this one. Bill

    D500 & 200-500mm carrying strap/technique

I use the Peak Design and I clip both ends to the 200-500 via this iShoot QS-80 Quick Release Plate. The plate fits into my Wimberley head or any other Arca-Swiss clamp if necessary. It has a camera strap hole to which I have attached the two Peak Design anchors; and, more importantly, has two...

    double pictures

Have you perhaps accidentally set the camera to bracket exposure by taking two shots? I don't know the D7200, but it's easy to do by mistake on the D500 and D850. If this is the problem the two images will have different exposure settings in the exif data.

    Garden Egret

I'm not offering an opinion on the identification, but for what it's worth Birds of the Western Palearctic says of Cattle Egret: "Bill and lores at hatching pale flesh or horn (also described as green), darkening to black at 5–10 days, becoming gradually yellow during 2nd and 3rd month." Bill

    Most appropriate equipment

I agree, go for a longer lens. The D500 is a good birding camera and pairs very well with the Nikon 200-500 f5.6 which is within your budget. As you say, there are arguments both ways regarding the Nikon and the Sigma. If you are photographing garden birds you might want to check the closest...

    New computer - recommendations?

I would get a solid state drive as your main boot disc (carrying the operating system and your software) for faster performance. The cheapest versions are SATA drives and are the equivalent of a normal hard drive - though you only need 250gb for this purpose coupled with a normal hard drive...

Nikkor 300mm f/4 AF (non AFS) for birding

I have the 300mm f4 afs and the non-afs 80-400. Where speed of focussing is important the 300mm wins easily and when matched to the 1.4 converter gives extra reach with no obvious loss of sharpness. I do not think the benefits of vr on the 80-400 outweigh advantage of fast focus, especially...

    Going macro - options???

Close-up filters are relatively inexpensive (though I would have my doubts about the quality of the really cheap sets) and easy to use. They come in different strengths each offering a different focussing range. All the normal camera functions are maintained. Extension tubes don’t add a bit of...

    Sir Peter Scott print...info? Thanks

The picture (the original was oil on board apparently) is reproduced in Scott's Observations of Wildlife (1980). In my copy the picture is slightly darker and the colours more saturated. Of course I have no way of knowing whether the book reproduction is accurate but it looks right with the...

    D800 focus points

If it's a D800 it's as Brin has described - press and hold the AF-mode button (that's the button inside the little lever used to switch between manual and autofocus) and rotate the front command dial to scroll through the various autofocus modes including single point. Bill

A couple of laptop questions please

CF card readers which plug into a USB socket are relatively inexpensive as are multi-format readers, so if the laptop meets your requirements in other respects I wouldn't worry.

Fair enough; might well be a Zebra Finch that has had its characteristic feature bred out. They are among the easiest captive breeders (which is how I bred them more than 40 years ago) so almost any form is possible.

ID please UK winter and spring

The zebra finch is named for the black and white cross stripes on the tail. If you're saying this is some sort of variety that has mutated or has been bred to remove the characteristic zebra-look then you might be right.
