Back to my enchanted Isle Fuertaventura-Feb 5th-12th.

Recently back from a 12 night stay in Caleta de Fuste. Tended to bird for an hour or two each morning with the odd sea watch dependent upon tide times. My wife isn't a birder so, as usual, it's doing what I can, when I can. The attached PDF details the areas where I birded and includes a...

    SWITZERLAND 2025

Great photo Frank. We lived in Zürich for six months back in 2009-2010. I only found out about Flachsee a few weeks before we were due to return back to the UK. Because of that I only went a couple of times. I used to catch the bus from Wiedikon to Unterlunkhofen, walk down to the river, then...

    Gambia family holiday

We used the Bakota Hotel at Kotu Creek in 2018. The garden area at the rear of the hotel has a viewing platform overlooking Kotu Creek and from the front of the hotel, you have direct access onto the beach. I used a guide on two days of our 7 day stay and, other than that, did a bit of birding...

    Australia - October/November 2024

Hi Kathy As guides, I used Ben Blewitt of Blue Planet Ecology for my day trip to the Atherton Tablelands and Simon Starr of Firetail Birdwatching Tours/Birding Victoria for Western Treatment Plant near Melbourne. Both highly recommended and if you Google both companies, you’ll get contact...

    Australia - October/November 2024

We’re recently back from a five week trip to Eastern Australia, initially flying in to Melbourne and working our way up the east coast to Cairns. Not a ‘full on’ birding trip, as my wife isn’t a birder. I was out for a couple of hours pre breakfast before it got too hot and, after that, saw...

    Eastern Australia birding information

I’m just back from five weeks in eastern Australia. Started off in Melbourne, drove up to Sydney over twelve days, ventured into the Blue Mountains then flew to Brisbane. Had twelve days around the Brisbane area, including O’Reilly’s then finished off by flying up to Cairns for a final eight...

    R7 delay

Seems like you may have sorted your problem but I had a similar thing with my R5. The camera freezing was happening more often and, over the last few days, sort of died on me. I had to remove the battery and then reinsert it to get the camera to work. I decided to wipe my SD card and also...

Review of the new spotting scope KOWA TSN-55A PROMINAR

I recently bit the bullet and bought the Kowa TSN-55A. I am currently on holiday in Australia and obviously thought the Kowa would make an ideal travel scope based on size, weight, portability and optical quality. I won’t repeat all the technical stuff regarding colour fringing, brightness etc...

    Cairns Area Bird Guides

Thanks for all your replies. I managed to get sorted with Blue Planet Ecology and have a day planned at various locations around Cairns, then time up on the Atherton Tablelands.

    Cairns Area Bird Guides

My wife and I will be in Cairns for eight days at the end of November this year. As part of a longer holiday, we will have worked our way up from Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. My wife isn’t a birder, so I tend to bird on my own first thing in the mornings and also when we are out walking...

American Black Tern - Beadnell Bay, Northumberland

This bird was first noted in spring/summer 2020 and has returned each spring since. Much blacker than ‘our’ black terns and the leading white edge to the wings is clearly noticeable. Not the best photos in the mid day harsh light. The bird was also being hassled by the odd Arctic Tern, so was...

    Merlin Birdsong App.

On a similar theme, I have iPad where I keep the bird photos I have taken. You can touch the screen on any particular photo and it will give the technical information, ie. Camera and lens make & model, settings etc. Recently, I have noticed that a little round symbol has appeared (on the bird in...

    Corncrake, Iona

Calling males between 20 and 30 as per the attached photo of an info board. It’s situated on the track which leads southwards from the jetty over to the golf course area to the north. A good area for the birds. I was recently lucky enough to see two, in mid May.

Corncrakes in Harris and North Uist

We’re recently back from a week on Mull. Corncrake was the target bird and I’m pleased to say, I saw two on Iona. One was seen just past the fire station (south of it) and the other, on the approaches to the golf course, in a field on the left hand side of the track. The latter bird was calling...

    Birding in Alicante Province

Thanks for that condor. I did get up into the mountains north of Crevillent and one of the Bonelli’s Eagles showed after only 15 minutes. Also there were around 6 Red-billed Chough and 2 Blue Rock Thrush. My wife, who isn’t a birder, was with me so I only stayed for half an hour. 🙄
