    Thanks for the help.

    Yala NP, Sri Lanka

Thank you all. I've learnt a lot about these sandplovers today. It is an area that seems to have developed a lot in recent months.

    Yala NP, Sri Lanka

Sorry - meant to say Yala not Wilpattu

    Yala NP, Sri Lanka

Wow. It gets quite difficult. I have read a paper on the lesser sand plover split (which may well be yours). I can see what you mean about non-stubby bill and lack of dark splotching on flanks. Also the marking on the breast does not form a complete ring. Leg colour seems less definitive. White...

    Wilpattu NP, Sri Lanka

Brilliant! I have had a look at the Oleander Hawkmoth and the Jade Hawkmoth - both would seem to be in range in Sri Lanka. The patterning on the wing seem to be a closer match for the Jade but I cannot see the white spot at the end of the forewing. Is it possible to distinguish between the two...

    Wilpattu NP, Sri Lanka

I saw this spectacular moth on a night walk on 24th January. It si impossible to tell the real colours as it was seen under red light. I was wondering if it is possible to identify. Thanks, Phil

    Sinharaja, Sri Lanka

These were spotted in Sinharaja Forest reserve in Sri Lanka on 14th/15th February and I was wondering if anyone could identify them. I think the first may be Calotes Versicolor. Thanks, Phil

Seen in Yala National Park on 7th February. I am thinking Cotton Pygmy Goose, Marsh Sandpiper and Siberian Sand Plover. Any guidance gratefully received. Thanks, Phil

    Sri Lanka bird identification

I am looking for a little help in identifying some birds from a recent trip to Sri Lanka. The first was seen on 25th January in Wilpattu NP and I am thinking could be a Lesser Sand Plover. The second was seen on 28th January in the gardens at the base of Sigiriya Rock. Is it a Sri Lanka...

Phnom Penh, Cambodia - id help please

So later in the day on January 27th this Tailorbird was seen in Iroha Gardens in Phnom Penh. It is a much better picture than the earlier sighting and, unless I am mistaken, this has a grey back and is good for a Cambodian Tailorbird. If this is the case, is it worth adding the photo to the...

Yes. It was definitely grey in real life. Thanks for the comments.

Phnom Penh, Cambodia - id help please

This is the only other picture I have and this has been lightened. I am not sure that it is helping with the identification. I think it will have to be noted as "perhaps Cambodian". Thanks for the help. Phil

Phnom Penh, Cambodia - id help please

It seems that it is not possible to distinguish the pond heron in non-breeding plumage as there is range overlap and limited distinguishing features - unless someone knows a way! Thanks for all of the comments. Phil

Phnom Penh, Cambodia - id help please

Interesting. 1 would presumably be an Asian Brown Flycatcher. The barring on the tail of 3 threw me. 4 would probably be a Common Tailorbird. thanks for the quick help.

Phnom Penh, Cambodia - id help please

Hello, these birds were seen on 27th January. I am not entirely sure of identification so would be grateful if someone could confirm (or correct) the following: 1. Plain Prinia 2. Plaintive Cuckoo 3. Lesser Coucal (or perhaps Greater) - no sighting of back! 4. Brown Prinia? 5. non-breeding...

drongos - Cat Tien NP, Vietnam

These two birds were seen on 25th January. I am struggling to ID them definitively. The first looks like a Bronzed Drongo given darker face and short tail. The next 2 photos are of the same bird which I think is an Ashy Drongo (but seems very blue). Can anyone confirm please?

Monitor Lizard ID - Cat Tien, Vietnam

Thanks Brian. That sounds good. Your photo is fantastic btw.

Monitor Lizard ID - Cat Tien, Vietnam

Thanks Andy. Given your suggestion I have looked closely at photos of each type of monitor and it seems to me that the Asian Water Monitor has an oval nostril whilst that of the Clouded Monitor seems slightly pointed toward the front. Is that the difference that I should be looking for? I have...

Monitor Lizard ID - Cat Tien, Vietnam

Thanks for the pictures. It seems from these posts that the Asian Water Monitor is quite happy high in trees hough the Clouded Monitor photo is a good match, particularly around the mouth. I am going to say it is most likely an Asian Water Monitor, as they are far more common, there are no...
