Village Weavers in The Gambia - December through to February - but what sex?

Is it possible to differentiate between female Village Weavers and males in non-breeding plumage? Try as I might, I cannot identify the sexes of the birds in the attached photos, at least not with any degree of certainty. My best guess would be that the bird in photo 5 is a female, but I'm not...

Prinia, Cisticola or something else? Kotu, Gambia on 31/01/24

I'm struggling with these little brown jobbies and would be grateful for some help. The first 3 photos are all of the same bird. I initially thought the photos were of a Tawny-flanked Prinia but now I've started to doubt myself. I'm not sure where in The Gambia I took Photo 4 but this photo was...

Wheatears on Lesbos between 9th and 12th May

I'm going round in circles so I thought I'd seek expert help. Photos 1 & 2 are of the same bird and I'm thinking it's a female. I am of the opinion that the birds in photos 3, 4 and 5 are all males. I'd go as far as to opt for all the birds except the one in photo 6 as being black-eared...

Thank you to everyone that took the time and effort to help me. It was much appreciated.

Photographed on 27/1/24 on Fajara Golf Course, Serekunda, The Gambia

Could someone please identify the bird in my photograph please? I shall stick my neck out with my best guess and say it's a female Northern puffback. Merlin, however, seems to think it's a grey-headed bushshrike!

Unidentified lone duck in Kotu, Gambia on 1.12.23

Thank you for taking the time to assist me. I now have no doubt at all that you are bang on! It's an immature White-faced Whistling-Duck. Thanks again.

Unidentified lone duck in Kotu, Gambia on 1.12.23

A number of local bird guides had a look at this duck for me but a definitive identification was not forthcoming. The crowd that rapidly gathered suggested that it was an unusual bird for this area. It was generally thought to be a juvenile. Some suggested a garganey or a wigeon but I couldn't...

UK - Male or female Northern Wheatear?

I have a few photos where I can readily distinguish between the male and female Northern Wheatears. However, I still struggle with Spring plumage, eclipse plumage, etc. Could someone please put me out of my misery and confirm the gender of the birds in these photos? Thank you.

Mottarone, Lake Maggiore, Italy - Aug, 2019 - Tree Pipit?

Thank you. I have been having a bit of banter with my son over this one. He said and I quote "Even the experts struggle to tell them apart, you can only confidently tell them apart by call or behaviour, we once saw one with you at Loch Doon doing the stereotypical flutter vertically from the...

Mottarone, Lake Maggiore, Italy - Aug, 2019 - Tree Pipit?

These photos were taken at Mottarone, some 1491 metres above sea level. There were quite a number of black redstarts up there but I only saw the one pipit. The more I look at the photos, the more i'm convinced I've finally got a Tree Pipit. However, I'm not often right and I'm fully prepared to...

Kep, Cambodia in June, 2019 - Sunbirds

Whilst in Kep I photographed male Olive-backed Sunbirds and male Brown-throated Sunbirds. I am assuming that these are the females. Can anyone assist me in confirming which are which?

Kep, Cambodia in June, 2019 - Pipit?

Thank you for your replies, your help is much appreciated. Having looked at Avibase for Cambodian bushlarks it looks like Gerben is probably right with the Indochinese Bushlark. Hey but what do I know? I just thought it was another pipit!

Kep, Cambodia in June, 2019 - Bird on a wire

Thank you for all your replies. To answer Andy's last question I thought it easier to upload a photo. The bird was photographed less than 20 metres away from the tractor.

Kep, Cambodia in June, 2019 - Pipit?

I saw a number of Paddyfield Pipits whilst in Cambodia but nothing as dark brown as this bird. I don't know whether or not it's just the lighting or a different species. Expert help would be appreciated once again please.

Kep, Cambodia in June, 2019 - Bird on a wire

I've identified much of what I saw in Cambodia but I'm stumped again. I have considered a female pied bushchat and it was that size. However, my previous photos of this bird show a much lighter and streaked breast. Please put me out of my misery. Incidentally it had a very strange gait and...

Warblers in Gambia - April, 2019

I have successfully identified 185 species photographed during my one week trip. The warblers, however, remain my stumbling block! Whilst I was there a local bird guide suggested there was a Melodious Warbler nearby. Within the next couple of minutes I photographed 3 different warblers. The...
