Is this Greater or Lesser Yellowlegs?

The length of the bill is diagnostic. My vote is also for Lesser.
  2. AF-S NIKKOR 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR

Review by 'bronze sunbird' on item 'AF-S NIKKOR 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR'

I have been using this lens for three years and I still continue to be impressed by the quality of images I can capture. It is now the only lens I use for bird photography and every time I look longingly at the top-dollar Nikon pro lenses I see trade-offs in weight, size and lack of flexibility...

    Should i buy a teleconverter!

Hi DeeDee. I use a Nikon D500 and the Nikkor 200-500mm zoom lens. I have recently been experimenting with teleconverters and here's what I have learned: the 1.4 teleconverter gets me a decent increase in reach at the cost of one f-stop. In theory the image should be degraded slightly but on a...

    RFI Birding break in Colombia

But Norfolk is always promising. When I lived in England our club always started off the new year with a weekend in Norfolk. We usually ended up with 80-100 species.

    RFI Birding break in Colombia

Oh you'll certainly add a bunch of birds in the birders' paradise that is Colombia. 884 birds on my life list come from three trips there. :eat:

Thrush ID help in Waterloo Ontario

    My vote is for Hermit.
  7. B

    Kinglet? Ontario

Yes, Golden-crowned it is. Ruby-crowned is a plainer bird with an obvious white eye ring.

    RFI Birding break in Colombia

Lynx Publications will be issuing a new and updated version of the classic Birds of Colombia by Steven Hilty. I'm looking forward to it.

Immature White-crowned Sparrow? Eastern Ontario, Canada

That's my vote as well. Nice image!

    Swainson's or Hermit Thrush.

Birdmeister is correct: Swainson's. Look for the buff-coloured mark that runs from the front of the eye to the bill. You won't see that mark on a Hermit.

Need ID on Warbler in Southeast PA

I agree with female Black-throated Blue. That little white square at the base of the primaries is diagnostic.
  14. AF-S NIKKOR 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR

    AF-S NIKKOR 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR

The Nikkor 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR is an image-stabilized, constant aperture telephoto zoom lens at a price point that has made it very popular among sports and wildlife photographers. The lens is designed for Nikons DX (cropped sensor) cameras but will work with full-frame camera bodies as well...

    Your Most Recent "Life" Bird

For me: Nelson's Sparrow near Pembroke on Saturday, and then icing on the cake with a Pomarine Skua in Ottawa on Sunday.

A couple of flycatchers, northern Virginia, Sept. 20, 2020

I would lean slightly towards Least for the first photo. They often show that crescent shape on the back part of the eye ring, a feature I have not seen in Willow/Alder. Primary projection also looks right. I agree with Birdmeister on the second photo: Eastern Wood-Pewee.

Savannah or Vesper Sparrow? Reno NV USA

They can be tricky to sort out. A few things to look for: Vesper Sparrows are very plain/drab sparrows. They are a bit oddly shaped compared to common sparrow - less plump. The white eye ring usually stands out. Savannah is more of a classic sparrow shape (similar to Song Sparrow). In the first...

    Shorebirds, Toronto

I agree with Birdmeister. Please send a few of the White-rumps my way. ;)

    Sanderlings ? South of France

This is what you are looking for in an autumn Sanderling. Very white below, white scaling on grey above, quite a bit chunkier than the small sandpipers and stints.

    Waders, UK

Yes, I agree with Dunlin and Ruddy Turnstone.

    Wagtail, Farmoor, Oxfordshire

I agree with Nutcracker. That black triangle on the breast is diagnostic.

Plover - American Golden or Black-bellied?

Seen in Southern Ontario on Friday. I am leaning towards American Golden because of the white supercilium and fine black stripe behind the eye, and because it doesn't look as block-headed as BBPL. But... shouldn't the primaries should stick out a bit more behind the tail? Juveniles of both...

    Lincoln's Sparrow? Northern Virginia, Sept. 20, 2020

Yes, looks good for a Lincoln's. Fine streaking on flanks and breast and that buff-coloured malar stripe are showing clearly.

    3 birds, Toronto area

The third bird looks good for a dowitcher. Short-billed would be the more likely candidate in Toronto in September but the photos aren't clear enough to allow a positive ID.
