Good to see all these TTVs being completed. I did a late visit to a square at Gorleston (Norfolk) on Friday and then spent the rest of the morning roving in TG51 where there was a lack of confirmed breeding evidence. It's really pleasing when you've knocked a square off the 'confirmed breeding...

Yeah, it's hard to believe the winter fieldwork for the national atlas will all be over in a week. I finished off some tetrads in mid-Wales at the weekend. First bird was a Red Kite. Generally a bit quieter than my visits in November but still a good range of species. My husband managed to...

The start of the fourth and final winter today. Can't believe how fast time has gone! I'm looking forward to visiting my new tetrads this winter and also some day trips away to gather roving records in those 10-km squares that are still white, yellow or orange on the species richness maps...

Sorry for the delay in replying. M for the Little Egret sounds fine. M and U (summering) are new codes we introduced so we could record breeding season distributions. It is particularly enlightening for the large gulls summering inland, well away from breeding areas. The FL for the Reed...

Hi Mike Pied Wagtail (Yarrellii) and Pied/White Wagtail are a real pain and will cause a problem here. Most people tend to enter Pied Wagtail as Pied/White Wagtail which is the default. Another pair to watch for is Mallard and Mallard (domestic). That one is down to interpretation by the...

Hi Mike M for 'migrant' would be appropriate in this case and makes it really clear they are not is suitable nesting habitat. Dawn

Hi Stephen Good to hear you've started your TTVs. We had a cold wind blowing across East Anglia over the weekend so I'm waiting a week or so to do mine. Managed to pick up some good Roving Records and breeding evidence through. Dawn

Hi But this would be a very unusual time of year for a Blackcap to be breeding. Some other species are known to breed early eg Crossbill so a breeding code may be applicable. I think for Blackcap in winter there should be no breeding code. Dawn

Hi There is no need to add breeding evidence codes to your winter records unless you come across genuine breeding attempts such as early Crossbills, Collared Doves, Woodpigeons etc. Breeding codes are used in the breeding season for birds in suitable breeding habitat. We need a big push on...

Hi Stephen Glad you hear you're out and about already for the Atlas. The weather here yesterday was dreadful and I finally made it out at 4pm into Thetford Forest for a walk. No new species for the 10-km square though! Let's hope we get a settled spell and we can get out and do our TTVs...

We're also struggling with Jay, Curlew and Willow Tit in TL88 - all breed for sure but it's so hard proving it. Ones to concentrate on next summer! Dawn

Hi Ken I think FL is one of the most difficult codes to apply. The fledged young should be still clearly dependent on the adults, so some sign of adults feeding young would help. I think just seeing a juvenile in an area where you know the adults have been around is a bit weak. Bullfinches...

It is great weather for Atlasing. I've done one TTV so far in Thetford forest where Woodlarks are busy nesting and there are also a few Tree Pipits back on territory. Seem to be a good number of Willow Warblers around. Been doing quite a bit of Roving, this is a good time to look for breeding...

Ah, that's why we need the validation process! I suspect this should have been entered as a Red-throated Diver given the location. The BTO two-letter codes are RG and RH and G and H are next to each other on the keyboard! The validation process will query this record with the observer and...

Good to see all this discussion about atlasing and pleased that you are getting out and about doing your TTVs and Roving. My own TTVs in Thetford Forest produced a Great Grey Shrike and a Lesser Spotted Woodpecker - both excellent birds to find and very lucky to get on a TTV. In some areas a...

Yep, the breeding season is now underway and recording does on until the end of July. Already over 5000 Roving records have been entered online in two days and 53 tetrads covered - an impressive start. I think I'll leave my Timed Tetrad Visits for another 10 days or so, just to let a few more...

Hi Joan over the last couple of days we have been installing a new application server which hosts all our web applications. We've had a notice on all the homepages for several days warning of the down time. The Atlas website has been up and down a bit since Monday but can I reassure you our...

Hi Ken The Tetrad Population Estimates can be entered on either the first visit or second visit. If you enter estimates on the first visit then they will be presented back to you when you enter the second visit and you can edit them if you wish. The idea of the Tetrad Population Estimates...

Hi The 'Rare and Scare species' message on Pied Wagtail (yarrellii) is a bug that has cropped up since we introduced the counts on Roving Records. We should be able to get this fixed this week. Pied/White Wagtail is used to cover both yarrellii and alba and also those you are not sure about...

Hi Kev We suggest you only enter your own records. If you know of other species seen in a 10-km square please encourage them to submit to the atlas online, or give them a paper Roving Record form to use (available from BTO). A record should be traceable to the original observer. Should we...

Counts on Roving Record forms We've agreed to add counts to Roving Records. The PDF that can be downloaded from the website has already been changed, and in due course (New Year sometime) the online Roving Record data entry system will be changed. The most useful counts will be those of flocks...

There have been a few TTVs in Scotland with 0 or 1 bird so far. These are usually remote moorland squares - all valuable data but agreed not the most interesting! Keeps you fit mind you! Dawn Balmer
