    Norwich Birding

Redshank in the cold I work at a timber yard on Barn Rd in Norwich and on Thursday last had a Redshank sheltering in one of our open wood sheds. We are only about 100 meters from the river.

    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

Had a wonderful morning at Hickling Broad yesterday. The Swallowtails were showing well, feeding on brambles and thistles within a few feet for minutes at a time. Small Tortoiseshells, Red Admirals, Meadow Browns and Ringlets everywhere. Speckled wood and Comma and a Skipper all active...

    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

False alarm...It happened again today in my Old Catton garden, but this time I chased it down and found it to be a very faded small tortoiseshell.

    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

Bouncing along in my forklift today,( in a Norwich wood yard) I'm pretty sure that a speckled wood shot past my face. Seems rather too early as I don't think they overwinter as adults. Any thoughts.

    Norfolk birding

Would I be right in assuming that a pair of white storks, feeding in the wet meadows by the Acle straight near Yarmouth, will have popped over from Thrigby hall ?

    Norwich Birding

Had a mute swan crash land in our wood yard on Barn Rd yesterday. No obvious injuries and it didn't seem perturbed at all. No room to get airborne again and no chance of it crossing 4 lanes of traffic during the rush hour, so I caught it and carried it back to the river. You can imagine the odd...

Buckenham Marshes Had a very pleasant walk from Strumpshaw, along to Buckenham station and down to the river today with my daughter. Was able to show her a Pair of Bullfinches up close with the morning sun on them, and then we found a pair of wings, from a freshly predated Golden Plover, on the...

    Norfolk Bees

Plants to attract bees. Have sown front garden with Phacelia tanacetifolia which is an annual plant with blue flowers usually grown as a green manure but especially attractive to bees when in flower. This evening it was literally buzzing with well in excess of 100 bumblebees of at least 6...

Hoverfly I found this smart little chap crawling under my garden bench this evening. I think it is Xanthagramma pedissequum, but stand to be corrected.

    Norfolk – Reptiles and Amphibians

Spawning My three foot across pond now has nine clumps of frogspawn in it, the result of three pairs and three unattached males getting it on in the last few days. All rather late this year, My Father's pond in the west of the county had spawn on the 28th of March this year compared to 28th of...

Badgers... A shame never to have seen a live one in the county, but a dead badger was on the main road (A1067) just to the Norwich side of Bawdeswell. Must be the third or fourth I've seen in that general area over the last few years.

New Year's Day County Bird Race 2013

Hi Penny, Not being one for crowds I don't go anywhere much on new years day, (although I did see Bittern and cranes at Hickling) so I did my big watch on Wednesday. It wasn't well thought out except an idea that Titchwell was going to feature heavily. (I'd not been to Titchwell for about 2...

    Norfolk birding

Not being one for joining the crowds, I took a leisurely stroll around Hickling reserve this morning. I honestly thought that I was in for the quietest day ever, when, after 30mins, my list stood at Bluetits 1...Woodpigeons 1. Luckily things did improve with good views of 5+ marsh harriers, a...

    Norfolk mammals

My wife and I went last Thursday and the wardens had just counted 78 pups. Obviously far more cows and several bulls offshore. 1 or 2 common seals on the beach and three cranes showing well but distantly. Lat years pup total was just over 500, so still a little way to go.

    Norfolk birding

At work today in the wood yard on Barn Rd, Norwich, I had the good fortune to be entertained all day by a pair of Grey wagtails. They spent the day chasing around the roof tops. Not very rare I know, but it cheered me up no end after biking to work in the rain....again.
