Zeiss SFL 8x40, A Field Review

No, it can't. Nobody here knows exactly what glass types Zeiss uses in the SFL. And even if someone did, he/she wouldn't know how they work together in the SFL. Unless he/she were part of the design team at Zeiss. Hermann

Zeiss SFL 8x40, A Field Review

True. This applies e.g. when scanning the sky for birds of prey at a migration hotspot. This is a very interesting point you make. I never thought of this before. I've using binoculars and scopes for over 40 years, and I don't have any trouble pointing narrow field binoculars at birds. Yes...

Zeiss SFL 8x40, A Field Review

Fair enough. We're all different. BTW, I also found the 7x50 SL pretty ordinary. Optically the 7x42 with the recent coatings is in a different world. One of the all time greats. A shame they stopped making it due to a lack of demand. I'd buy one with updated coatings in a heartbeat. Same here...

Zeiss SFL 8x40, A Field Review

Well, I've got several old binoculars with wide fields of view (e.g. Zeiss West Porro 10x50 with 130m/1000m, Zeiss West Porro 8x30 with 150m/1000m), and I do like them. I also had a chance to fool around with an old Zeiss with more than 80 degrees AFOV. Large fields of view are nice, and may be...

Zeiss SFL 8x40, A Field Review

I agree a large field of view can be useful. It is also quite addicting. However, I feel you overemphasise its importance. A large field of view is only one criterion when looking at binoculars. There are plenty of others, like size and weight and all the optical parameters. There are situations...

Zeiss SFL 8x40, A Field Review

I have though. With a very early grey SF 10x42. Later SFs I looked through were more neutral, although they still had a slight green cast. If you want so see a really neutral pair, try a recent Habicht 7x42. Neither the EDG nor the SE are neutral at all. They're "warm", emphasizing the reds. I...

Zeiss SFL 8x40, A Field Review

Boosters are useful for many reasons, not just to check the quality of scopes and binoculars. The most commonly used booster is IMO the Zeiss 3x12 "tripler". There are several threads on the 3x12 on this forum. Hermann
