Is this a Great Spotted Woodpecker?

I've a pal Garvagh direction and he has started seeing woodpeckers, not really that far from Dungiven. Sorry I've only seen GSP on TV and webcams but it looks the right attitude / behaviour to me.

    It’s May!—has anybody bought/tried out a NL Pure 32 yet?

You are right of course. Better to enjoy what you have and see what you can see. Some times chewing over equipment (bins) reading magazines and forums are just substitute activities.

    It’s May!—has anybody bought/tried out a NL Pure 32 yet?

I wanted to compare them to my ELs, I might have had or made the opportunity to compare them, but honestly I can't afford them. I'm still interested though (sighs sadly).

    Greenfinch: Is this papillomatosis❓ 🚑🏥🧫

This might be scaly leg mites it's common in cage birds and chickens, and street pigeons. It's not uncommon amongst wild birds in areas were a lot of domestic fowl are kept. (I used to keep canaries), the usual treatment is ivermectin in the aviary water supply. Older birds suffer from scaly...

    Thoughts ? on Binocular Colors

Any dull background colour is fine I don't want to stand out in nature or a crowd. In private conversation with the like minded or amongst friends or family who pretend to be interested, I don't mind displaying or discussing the latest / greatest, although I don't care for ostentation either...

    Bird for id! UK

I've seen what was described to me as a Continental White Wagtail exactly once, in Kent in late April. Greyer back and tail. I don't believe I've ever seen one here in Northern Ireland although you can see pied wagtails in almost any car park!

Might be a White Wagtail its pale enough. Pied wagtails are are similar blacker and much more common.

Vixen Foresta 8x32 Porro (vs Nikon E2 8x30)

I've just swapped my Vixen Foresta 8x32 CF Wide for new 100w solar panel and small golf cart battery. They were sought out and purchased despite being discontinued on the strength of comments above. Don't feel offended I'm not blaming anyone, I know that enthusiasts sometimes perceive tiny...

    I like slower focus

Most of my nature watching seems to be 10 to 30m but I do like to be able to focus on closer subjects but rarely do I require less than 3mtrs, (10'). What I like is a fair amount of resistance over a short throw. Much as I enjoy my ELs they're too easy. The Habicht is just too much resistance...

Nice things from old binoculars that most new ones don't have

I had a pair of Tasco?, binoculars which where OK and graduated on 5mtr increments out to about 30mtrs at which point there were two dots possibly in place of or what was left of an infinity symbol. Unfortunately those binoculars sleeps with the fishes, in Lough Erne.

Nice things from old binoculars that most new ones don't have

Very late to the party here but the lack of an indexing mark often indicates a Chinese copy of better known binoculars. However lots of Dollonds seem to have an impressed mark so faint it’s pointless, a few others it’s a tiny dot of paint which probably was over zealously polished clean off. I...

I Like the Field Pro System

The only thing is the string! I seemed constantly in tangles with it I switched to strap lugs provided by Swaro service ( not included with my ELs or lost by me) and they are still self plumbing, I use the Optech straps, doubless there are better but I have the Optech stuff already.

    Linnet

I was out for my daily stroll round the constituency and went as far as the marshy field at the top of our hill in amongst the whin bushes (Gorse for some) was a what I thought was a female linnet joined a minute later by a male, while not a uncommon they have become a rarity in these parts. So...

Zeiss Terra ED or Vortex Vipers?

I only toyed briefly with the Hawke Frontier EDX and compared to HDX didn't see much difference? Back to the point of the thread: The Vipers would be my choice but I have the 10x42 and it focuses Close to the Right, Far to the Left. Make sure you can live with this. I live with it but don't...

    swaro news

I don't have a reference - other than Open University. (BBC2) with a title like "Using your vision is a learned activity". I'm sure this was also taught in Biology at school. Admittedly memory is often the worst reference. Yes I'm talking about human newborns. New born zebras for instance...

    swaro news

Newborns see the world upside down and back to front. The brain sorts that out in the first few weeks. There have been experiments done with mirror goggles and depending on the individual people do manage the reversed upside down view after a time. However, I don't know if they adapt or if the...

    Veiling Glare Comparisons

I think everyone experiences "flare" to some degree and it's my belief that in certain other circumstances veiling is impossible to avoid. Even with the naked eye against strongly reflected light, for example I have polarised sunglasses for fish watching! If millions of years of evolution...

    Veiling Glare Comparisons

Sunshine the cause of all binocular troubles. Bigger than Zeiss, Swarovski, Nikon, and Leica. Available to cause consternation in all financial brackets. Good for looking at stuff though. My point really is that the sun is so big and so mighty, so all encompassing, that I think its...

Levenhuk Heritage Base or Komz BPC 5 8x30

A non-technical if long-review. These were sent in error by an eBay dealer in the Russian Federation. He made his mistake good and invited me to keep these as he didn't want to pay to get them back. (What was ordered was a pair of Russian 10x40 which are actually very good if rough. (Nephew...

Dipper photos Ireland - food type?

I’m an angler not an entomologist. I’ve fished Irish waters North and South for 50 years. There are 200 species of Caddis fly here, most case builders. They are usually divided as follows: little, large, dark olive, light olive, large dunne, brown and cinnamon.

Dipper photos Ireland - food type?

Caddis fly larvae build protective cases of grit and river debris so probably need broken out of the casing. Generally called sedge flies by anglers and country people. I love dippers. Love those photos.

    Veiling Glare Comparisons

The trouble with glare comparisons - is different people have different expectations, live at different latitudes and even have different attitudes. But theres always some glare available if you look for it :) Clearly who ever decided to burn giga-trillions of tons of hydrogen in this corner of...

    Birds don't like my Peanuts!

When I had peanuts in a feeder nothing seemed to touch them until I moved the nut feeder against a wall. I've mixed them in the feeders with suet pellets. (Limited Sucess) Chopping them in an old blade coffee grinder for ground feeding works too but this is probably a bad time of year for that.

Do I want an EII 8x30?

@brocknroller You mean you cant!! Lots of european kids spend hours trying to keep a football off the ground. Balancing it on your forehead/nose is one of the basics. It seemed important at the time. More important than French and German and English and English Lit, and Maths, and...
