    Western Scotland birding

Sounds like you have residents coming, great news :D We have a pair who visit most days for food and they've brought youngsters the last couple of years, so hoping that continues. May have been last year we had 8 at one time ! Male bullfinch sitting in sunlight is a sight to behold, same...

Are chaffinches a bit thick ?

2 weeks on and the chaffinches still haven't gone back inside the cage, either to the feeders or the trays catching the dropped seed underneath. All the other birds are feeding as normal 😂

Are chaffinches a bit thick ?

Morning everyone :D Question/observation for you all. I have my feeders hanging inside one of those cages you see at filling stations for gas canisters. Feeders are suspended from the roof on carabiner clips and I have two long trays suspended approximately 18 inches below the feeders to...

Very busy at the bird feeder today!

Not had that behaviour at this house before, be interesting to see how it develops :D

Very busy at the bird feeder today!

Beautiful day here, blazing sun but still really cold. Half a dozen or so goldfinch have made regular visits so far, along with coal tit, chaffinch, robin and a pair of bullfinch. We also have a wren who has been very vocal and visual the last 2 days, which is unusual, normally only get...

Montrose Basin and the surrounding area

I've seen 3 kestrels on separate occasions in the last week in the East Kilbride/Glasgow area. Commented at the time that I don't remember seeing one for years before this. Maybe there's an ongoing recovery in numbers :D

Very busy at the bird feeder today!

It's been really quiet at the feeders the last couple of weeks. This morning has seen a bit of a change, not sure if the temperature of -2 and heavy frost has anything to do with it. So far today we've had : Robin Blackbird Chaffinch Goldfinch Blue Tit Coal Tit Magpie Let's see if we can get...

    Peanut quality

Welcome to BirdForum ! :) Agree with the above, they don't look the best. I would go back to the supplier as well, either for a refund or replacement bag. Well done on checking first tho, a lot of people would just have put them out regardless (y)

Nyjer seed not attracting goldfinches ?

Put out some sunflower hearts and see how quickly the goldfinch start to feed (y)

Very busy at the bird feeder today!

-4 to start the morning, bobble hat needed to put out the feeders 😂 Carabiner clips that I hang the feeders from were frozen solid, wish I'd worn gloves as well ! 3 very impatient blue tits flitting back and forward, telling me in no uncertain terms to hurry the 'F' up and make with...

Very busy at the bird feeder today!

3 coal tits and 2 blue tits at the feeders this morning which is good to see. Gone really quiet over the last few weeks, even the goldfinch and chaffinch numbers have dropped dramatically. Maybe this is the winter visiting season starting up with a vengeance again 😂

Very busy at the bird feeder today!

There's a chance of greenfinch if you have goldies but not a guarantee. We get the occasional one or two sometimes in amongst the 20 odd goldfinch that visit daily. The greenfinch prefer sunflower hearts and the goldfinch will happily eat those as well. Good luck (y)

Do Birds still eat regular seeds?

I find mixed seed to be a waste of money, stick with the sunflower hearts (y)

Product design project- creating a sustainable bird product help

A simple cage feeder, but with a wider cage between the bars and the actual feeder seems like a fairly obvious winner to me. Most cage feeders you see, the magpies, starlings etc can still reach the feeding ports by clinging to the outside of the cage. This one is about as wide a gap that I...

    Hello fellow birders!

Excellent pictures @nitinchitale Maybe you shouldn't bother with formal instruction, you appear to be doing just fine !! (y)

Very busy at the bird feeder today!

Solitary greenfinch at the feeders earlier today, in amongst 15 or so goldfinch and about 10 chaffinches. Always good to see a greenfinch make an appearance :)

    Nuthatches in Scotland

Late to this particular party, as usual 😂 Saw one at K-Woodlands in East Kilbride last summer, only the second time I'd ever seen one, never mind where I live. Been back to the same area of the woods on multiple occasions with no success. Maybe now I've posted this I should go back and it...

Very busy at the bird feeder today!

The male was down earlier and had a feed. Officially a resident bird now :p

What more can I do?? Change feeders?? Feed type??

I'd suggest replacing the nyjer and sunflower seeds with sunflower hearts. Sit back and wait for the goldfinch hordes to descend, will probably only take a few days after you change over.

Very busy at the bird feeder today!

Female house sparrow visited this morning, only the second we've had since moving here 3 and a half years ago. As the first was a male I can now say we have a pair of sparrows 😂

    Feeding Times

I put the feeders out about 7.30 after I've signed on to the work laptop. But can hear the birds chirping away from about 6.30 onwards Early morning is always busy, and the tits and goldfinches are always about most of the day.
