New Phone - Merlin ID app STILL not working

I recently bought a A56 phone and it works well with Merlin. I had used Merlin previously on a very old OnePlus phone and I haven't seen any significant differences between the two. Merlin can throw up some surprises however and there are some species that it has problems with, it has problems...

Wildlife Recorder no longer being supported: consider moving to iGoTerra

I just converted from Wildlife Recorder to Scythebill yesterday and I was astonished how easy it was. I'm not so keen on adding new sightings but it works and I will get used to it... I have a lot of records from about 1990 and it just worked. Mike (in Geneva)

Wildlife Recorder no longer being supported: consider moving to iGoTerra

I have also been using Wildlife Recorder since the very beginning with the initial version in about 1990 or thereabouts, I was also very satisfied by the app and the support that it received. I had planned to continue using it but in the last few days it died and cannot access the data. I think...

    SWITZERLAND 2025

No luck, there were two in and around Geneva, but they were in huge flocks of Barn Swallows and House Martins. I did give it a try at Verbois but I lost patience among the swirling groups👎

    SWITZERLAND 2025

13'000 Honey Buzzards counted in 48 hours south of Lyon in the Rhone valley, so there should be some for everybody in the next day or two. Mike

    SWITZERLAND 2025

A Temminck's Stint is showing well in Geneva (Eaux Vives), and unusual numbers of Grasshopper Warblers, in my opinion, are being reported around Geneva this spring. Mike

    SWITZERLAND 2025

A surprisingly big number of White-winged Terns appear to be passing over Switzerland at the moment, several seen at Préverenges VD but a group of 20 was seen at Fanel. Hopefully some might make a stop around Geneva😊

    SWITZERLAND 2025

There were at least 6 reported from Geneva city centre yesterday, in spite of it being wet all day. So it looks positive☝️

Thanks, must be the local accents then, when there are more of them around I will try again.

    SWITZERLAND 2025

I heard a first Cuckoo on 9 April, close to Lake Geneva but just in France at least one was heard at Sionnet on 13th April. By the way there are some very early Great Reed Warblers this year, I detected individuals at two widely separated sites on 14th April By the way my Merlin was not able to...

    SWITZERLAND 2025

I expect so as they have bred two years running and several have already been seen this spring. Keep fingers crossed. Plenty of Wryneck around now and several singing Hoopoes. Mike

    SWITZERLAND 2025

Quite a sight with 206 White Storks in the fields around Geneva this morning after arriving yesterday evening. The first Hoopoes have also appeared. Mike

Wait for Trump, It's not that old a name as when I used to make frequent work trips to New England they were still Old Squaw Mike :)

    SWITZERLAND 2025

There appear to be more and more around Geneva this winter, and in addition they have existed for at least ten years along the Arve valley between Geneva and Chamonix where they have bred every year. The Arve valley is several degrees colder than Geneva!

    Switzerland 2024

Yes they released quite a good number of WTE juveniles this year and I think that five is the correct number.

Did you trip over them during the day or did you stay into the evening when they were hunting?

    Switzerland 2024

A European Nightjar appeared in Geneva on Monday and Tuesday and was seen hunting over the moored boats in the Eaux-Vives marina on Tuesday evening. Nightjar is very rare in this part of Switzerland. All the nearby breeding sites were abandoned many decades ago.

    Switzerland 2024

A Richard's Pipit was seen today in the Canton of Geneva near Bardonnex. Two were also seen a few years ago at the Chevrier migration spot so perhaps these are birds heading for the wintering area in La Crau in Southern France.

There was a Long-tailed Skua on Lac Léman (French sector) yesterday together with two Arctic Skuas.

The Rollers in Geneva were still visible this morning and my guess is that they will remain for some time as previous first year birds have remained for several weeks. Mike

    Switzerland 2024

The observer also reported visits to a known nest site, so breeding is pretty well certain as it was on the same building where breeding was proved in 2022 at about the same date.

    Switzerland 2024

One that got away! An Eleanora's Falcon was seen yesterday passing over the raptor migration counting site at Chevrier (FR) about 20km from Geneva and which presumably overflew parts of Switzerland. Mike

    Merlin ID

I am using Merlin in Switzerland and it does seem to be over enthusiastically detecting Marsh Warblers, even though we have some! It is very bad with some water birds such as Great Crested Grebes which are very noisy during the breeding period but ignores them completely! Sometimes it can be...

    Switzerland 2024

They are visiting the nest boxes for Common Swifts that are installed on a number of buildings and also the spaces behind window shutters where they have bred in the past. This will be their third year in Geneva. Mike
