Barstow, CA; 29 August, Unknown flock overflight

It’s a hard one, and I don’t have anything better to go on. I’m going to leave them unidentified. Thanks for the input though.

Barstow, CA; 29 August, Unknown flock overflight

Probably a long shot here, but this flock overflew us around dusk just outside Barstow, CA on 29 August. I’ll own the fact that photos are terrible, I snapped four with my phone as I saw them go. The last photo is one of the others I cropped. Wing beats were relatively quick. Any hope here...

Pied Billed Grebes? Monterey, CA 16 June 2024

Thank you. That's what I've recorded them as unless someone says something else.

Pied Billed Grebes? Monterey, CA 16 June 2024

These birds were in the background of a picture I took of something else (Violet Green Swallow) so they're out of focus. Are these juvenile Pied Billed Grebes? One looks bigger than the others, and the orange splotch on the bill/cheek doesn't look good for a Pied Billed Grebe. But it does look...

    Red-footed Booby? Monterey, CA 18 November 2023

Thanks to all that looked and commented. I'm leaving this one unidentified. Lesson learned: bring a pair of binoculars!

    Red-footed Booby? Monterey, CA 18 November 2023

It doesn't come through too well in the pictures, but the bill definitely had a bluish tint to it in person. I haven't seen any cormorant species around here that meets that requirement. But my pictures were horrible. So I know where the blame lies!

    Red-footed Booby? Monterey, CA 18 November 2023

No offense taken. I was out with a phone only and the bird was too far.

    Red-footed Booby? Monterey, CA 18 November 2023

Saw this while entertaining family friends, and not equipped for birding, hence the bad phone pictures. There has been a red-footed booby in the area for some time, shape, color, bill color seem about right, and I can't think what else it might be. Thanks for taking a look.

Sharp-shinned or Coopers Hawk; Monterey, CA 03 August 2023

Torn on this bird that was hunting at our feeders this morning: Sharp-shinned or Coopers Hawk. I'm leaning towards Sharp-shinned based on a couple of points: It looks like the terminal band on the tail is thin. Its shins look quite thin (but with nothing to compare against, I know this isn't...

    Allen's Hummingbird; Monterey, CA 17 June 2023

Got a couple of photos of this hummingbird this evening. Pretty confident it's not an Anna's hummingbird - which is what I predominantly see here. Looks like Allen's, but looking at Sibley seems could be Rufous. But looking at range maps Allen's seems more likely.

Loon? Monterey, CA Harbor 11 June 2023

Common Loon is my best guess here, but I'm really uncertain and these pictures aren't great. Any ideas?

American Crow, right? Asilomar Beach, CA 21 May 2023

thanks everyone. I'll keep it as I thought: American Crow.

American Crow, right? Asilomar Beach, CA 21 May 2023

This is an American Crow, right? Every time I convince myself it is, I look at those throat feathers and second guess myself. But they don't seem that shaggy. I think this is a case of me wanting it to be a raven more than it wants to be a raven. Am I correct here?

    Sharp-shinned/Cooper's? Monterey, CA 13 May 2023

Thanks all. Appreciate the help here on the classic sharpie/cooper's question. I'll leave it as it is in eBird - "Sharp-shinned/Cooper's".

    Sharp-shinned/Cooper's? Monterey, CA 13 May 2023

Bird was on our fence yesterday morning. We have 4 feeders up, have for months, and this is the first time we've had a predator come in that we've seen. I lean towards immature Sharp-shinned (but am not sure) based on following: -Streaks on chest appear more coarse than thin -Head and neck seem...

Northern Harrier? Monterey, CA 14 February 2023

Thanks to all for the advice here. I'm going to leave this one un-identified. Too little to go on to be certain about anything.

Northern Harrier? Monterey, CA 14 February 2023

No photo on this one (I was on a bicycle at the time). Bird appeared to be the right size, shape, and coloration for a Northern Harrier: Predominantly gray above with very clearly visible white rump. Longish tail. Problem is habitat: saw it in a suburban neighborhood appearing to move towards a...

Hawk - Monterey, California 31 January

Thanks all for the discussion and insight here. Sounds like a consensus of red-tailed.

Hawk - Monterey, California 31 January

Thanks for the help here. I ruled out ferruginous hawk based mostly on habitat. This was in a suburban neighborhood surrounded by wooded area. I looked at ferruginous as more open country. Would we expect to see more of the leg on a red-shouldered hawk? That might point towards red-tailed?

Hawk - Monterey, California 31 January

Two photos of same hawk in a tree top in a suburban neighborhood. My best guess is red-shouldered based on apparent pattern on abdomen which is slightly evident in the first picture. I didn’t see anything that really looked pointed toward re-tailed or anything else. Any ideas? Thank you!

Hybrid Goose? Monterey, CA 12 October 2022

Spotted this bird along the shore of Del Monte Lake. Lots of Canada Geese usually in the area, but this didn't look like one. Closest I could find in my Sibley is a greater-white fronted goose x Canada goose hybrid. But that's not a great match. Thanks!

Cliff Swallow? Monterey, California. 26 July 2022

    That's what I thought. Thanks.

Cliff Swallow? Monterey, California. 26 July 2022

While reviewing some photos of a hawk in a tree I noticed I had also, by chance, captured this swallow . Photo quality is poor, but based on overall bird shape, the light colored rump, and what looks like a lighter colored nape compared with what should be in this area right now, cliff swallow...

Caspian Tern? Asilomar State Beach, Pacific Grove, California. 20 July 2022

No offense taken. Camera was on manual, and the bird surprised me (it was past me before I realized it wasn't another gull). Frankly, I was happy it was usable at all!
