    Took a friend to a moth survey last night and dropped him home at 02:45 in Welwyn Garden City. As I pulled up near his house a badger shot out of one garden and across the road in front of us with a hedgehog in it's mouth, then down the opposite pavement. Rather an astonishing sight.     Whilst out doing moth mine surveys in DEC 22 I spotted this fawn in a field. The photo is using a bridge camera with massive zoom so not brilliant. Any idea what species? It spent most of its time tucked down but put its head up once. N Herts.

    20/08. 209 of 51 species. NFY - Crassa unitella, Latticed Heath and Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing. For those of you waiting for and wanting Jersey Tiger, beware of what you wish for. I had 51 last night. They become a problem crashing around in the trap. 22 Lime-specked Pug, second highest number.

    13-18/08. A few NFY - Orange Swift, Cabbage Moth, Marbled Beauty, White-spotted Pug, Mouse Moth and Bordered Pug. 5 Mouse Moths last night, only had 3 last year in total.

    It was only about Willow Ermine. It was posted by Ben Sale @Hertsmoths on 12/07/21. If you use Twitter you should be able to find it pretty easily. Ben is an avid moth-er and very good at micros. He has a blog too. Hope that helps. William.

    I had both male and female Gem last night to my trap. This is a rare moth inland with only a very few recent Herts records so rather a great find. Third Dewick's Plusia of the year too This means there are some good migrants out there so keep those lights on people.

    10/08. Garden tick - Willow Ermine, Yponomeuta rorrella. Probably would have had this earlier if I'd realised that they weren't so difficult to identify. A post on Twitter gave some id tips.     August Thorn - wings held nearly flat, outer-cross-line kinked near leading edge and faint central mark. Sept Thorn - Plainer and paler, and without central dot. Outer cross-line not kinked. Ex- Manley. Third photo is very faded, can't honestly tell.

    07/08. Low numbers, 47 of 27 species. NFY - Dun-bar (surprised it's taken this long to get one) and Acrobasis advenella. Lifer - Waved Black. Very pleased to see this one.

    I was told when I first started to never turn my trap on till after dusk and off before dawn to avoid wasps. I try to do this as much as possible and haven't had many wasps, so guess it works. I didn't use to run till dawn but have this year, I have notice an odd one or two the last few mornings...

    06/08. Last night was breezy and very cool so numbers were down. 58 of 30 species. Only highlight was the second Dewick's Plusia of the year. The Norfolk website suggests they are established and breeding so I guess they are doing that around here too, in low numbers.

    04/08. 96 moths of 44 species. Another garden tick - a Herald. Been looking for this one since last autumn and really hoping for it. It was the first moth I saw when I emptied the MV at 00.30 when changing to the actinic. A beautiful moth.

    Willow Beauty, Rustic/Uncertain, Ringed China-mark, possibly Garden Grass-veneer and Mottled Beauty. PS I don't gaurantee being right so perhaps wait for some more comments. If you are just starting have you seen the Norfolk Moths website, you will find the flying tonight tab amazingly useful.
