    UK Dragonflies and Damselflies 2025

Was leading a bird walk today at Ruislip Lido/Woods where a breeding plumaged Slavonian Grebe (probable first site record) was the avian highlight, but the Odonata highlight was a couple of Downy Emeralds-my first for the site. Also my first Black-tailed Skimmer of the year, 3 teneral...

    terrapin in Metochi Lake, Lesvos

European Pond Turtle should have yellow spots on the head. Structurally these look more like Balkan which are much more common on Lesvos, though not well marked.

    UK Dragonflies and Damselflies 2025

Caught up with my first two adult male Broad-bodied Chasers on one of the ponds in Richmond Park yesterday. Generally a cool, breezy day so not ideal for flying insects but also had a Hairy Dragonfly & Large Red Damsel on one of the sheltered ponds in Isabella Plantation.

    UK Dragonflies and Damselflies 2025

We long overdue a decent influx of Red-veined Darters. The last 2 years have been very poor, especially in the south-east.

My first dedicated butterfly trip today to the other side of town to Hutchinson's & the adjacent Chapel Banks, near Croydon. 14 species seen. Most abundant was Brimstone with c30 individuals. New for the year were Small Heath (2), Small Copper, Small Blue, Grizzled Skipper (2), Dingy Skipper...

    Serapias sp Crete

What is a species with orchids seems to be an impossible ask as every taxonomist basically disagrees with each other. Two new books have just come out with very different taxonomies. Much more conservative is the second edition of the Kew publication, Orchids of Europe & the Med by Kuhn...

A small moth flying along a hedge track this morning. Pleasingly it settled in a conspicuous position rather than hiding under a leaf. My first Common Carpet this year.

    First Butterfly of the year?

One new for the year today. Doing my regular Sunday patch & saw a blue flying low across the ground. Had a hunch it was a Common Blue & fortunately it briefly settled allowing a view of the underwing pattern, confirming my thoughts. I don't normally see them until May, but we are in the last few...

    First Butterfly of the year?

I'm hoping with the warm weather & change in wind direction we might get a fair few migrant insects turning up. Despite living in the south I didn't see a single Clouded Yellow in the UK the last 2 seasons, though a few on the continent. Doubt I saw more than a dozen Painted Ladies last year.
