  1. Turquoise Jay

    Turquoise Jay

Many beautiful colors in neotropical birds, but blue is my favorite. This bird, a Turquoise Jay, is certainly a beautiful shade of blue. It also is very "Jay-like" in its behaviors. Anyone who is familiar with the USA's Blue Jays would be very familiar with these birds. Shot with a Canon R5...

Great shot. Laguna del Lagarto Lodge-one of my favorite lodges! Always good photo ops there.

Nice shot of a beautiful bird. Your shot does him justice!

Great bird and image. Glad to see you back in Latin America.

Getting this shot involved a significant hike near Nono, Ecuador. Sometimes I have to remember that a 26 year old guide thinks differently than I do (at 75 yo) about a "flat" hike to get to a fruiting tree that tanagers frequent.

    Golden-rumped-Euphonia-PBG.jpg

There is no substitute for local knowledge. This image of a Golden-rumped Euphonia was taken at Puembo Bird Garden near Quito, Ecuador. I had this bird on my "must see" list for a number of years and told the owner of the lodge, Mercedes Rivadeneira that I really wanted to see and photograph...

I am sorry this is a late reply. I believe the gift shop closes every winter. Not sure how early. Yes, the feeders are still stocked (weather permitting). The local Audubon group does this at least 2x per week. I was there in Jan of 2022; lots of snow and the road was closed 1 day out of 3...

Brazil Question: anyone use Traventu Tour Company for Brazil or anywhere else?

Thank you for your thoughts. We will see. Amazing how many of these lodges, especially in the Pantanal, are already sold out for 2023.

    Arenal/La Fortuna, Costa Rica

Certainly. One of my friends who used him (about 3 weeks ago) who is very experienced birder and has traveled extensively, stated Nestor was one of the best he had used. "Sonar ears and Xray/Telescopic" eyes was the description.

Brazil Question: anyone use Traventu Tour Company for Brazil or anywhere else?

We are considering a June, 2023, trip to SE Brazil. The first 10 days of the trip would be arranged by this company. Small group, 4 maximum, with emphasis on photography. The second 10 days will be independent and likely centered around Itororo Lodge (partially as a result of the great report...

Atlantic Rainforest of Rio de Janeiro, Itororo Lodge, South-East Brazil

Wow! Great report. I am headed to this area in June of 2023 and this report settled the deal-will include Itororo Lodge.

Thank you. I have seen some YouTube videos on this lodge and will look into it.

    Brazil Atlantic Rainforest

We are considering a trip to this area in July of 2023. We will use a tour service for 2 weeks, primarily south of Sao Paulo, but want to extend the trip to stay at some of lodges north of Sao Paulo or even north of Rio de Janeiro. Any suggestions for lodges? We are photographers, not...

    Recommendations for Brazil Atlantic rainforest

We are interested in a trip to the Atlantic rainforest of Brazil in 2023. We are interested in bird photography only, not birdwatching. Any recommendations for lodges, tour companies, guides, etc. Jim

Very nice. You did a great job of getting a very tough exposure right. Nice feather detail in the whites without losing the blacks entirely.

    Budget travel advice

I have traveled and birded southern Mexico several times and would certainly recommend Oaxaca as a starting point. Roque Antonio Santiago ([email protected]) has been terrific in the two times I have used his services. He will pick you up at the Oaxaca airport and in 7 days will...

Would not recommend Peru Birding Tours

I have dealt with scores of guides and lodges, mostly in Latin America, over the last 10 years. Most have been great; some only adequate, but even with some language barriers, I have never felt taken advantage of. This last trip to Peru, in August and September or 2021, changed that. I would...

    Ecuador

I have spent quite a bit of time in the northern Ecuador area, both East and West slope, including Rio Napo and Mindo. While I am more of a bird photographer than birder, per se, let me know if you would like to discuss our experiences.
