Thanks!! These scrubs are used to me, as I’ve been watching as they raise their eggs (now little fledges!) since late March-Early April!

Looking at the pic more, it looks like this parent’s a bit frazzled! I would be too, if I had to feed a screaming fledge every 15 or so minutes!

    California Scrub Jay

This beautiful scrub jay, who’s also a parent of some little fledglings, let me get the perfect shot of it! This is one of the best pics of a scrub jay I’ve gotten yet!

How do birds identify at distance what is edible?

What Pianoman said’s a good hypothesis! Some birds also use scent as well, eg; turkey vultures use their sensitive sense of smell and visual cues to find carrion!

What a use! And I'm excited for your upcoming post of a kite extracting a snail! I haven't ever seen that before, considering I live all the way across the states, where snail kites are no where in sight!

Hi and welcome to the forum! Is there anymore information on this article, like the year it was published? This could help with tracking down any archives of it! Great blue heron rookery

I bet those pictures will be awesome, and a heron rookery on your property sounds wicked! I've never heard of one[even with all the herons living in my area] but they seem cool. Also, a "push notification" will give you little notifications on your computer or phone, like a little pop-up every...

    Bald eagle courtship ritual spotted!!

As I was walking through my campus, I heard a whistling that I thought was a seagull… until I looked up and saw two BALD EAGLES, TALONS LOCKED, AND SWINGING THROUGH THE SKY!! It was a wonderful sight, that I didn’t think I’d see… new bird for the life list! And a good things I had my binoculars...

Yup! Typically I hear the starlings here making their usual song, sometimes with strange arpeggios mixed in too!

California- Sutter county- Apr. 21; Strange bird seen and heard.

Ah! It could be, I thought possibly a starling but usually the starlings in my area never make such sounds! And, the cowbird and blackbird theories could work too! I’ll have to see if I see them more today… thank you! (and sorry for any wasted time!)

And I tried to use Merlin- but it wouldn’t identify the bird… I have attached a screen recording of the spectrogram here through! I am not sure if the bird I SAW and the bird heard here are the same however, but I am sure I heard the sketched out bird making this sound!

California- Sutter county- Apr. 21; Strange bird seen and heard.

This bird was very dark, I think possibly black or very very dark reddish brown. I attached a sketch I made from memory, as I did not have the ability to take a pic, as it was too far away and I only say it with my binoculars…
