Nikon FF (and DX) Mirrorless rumours/ announcements

I got out today for the first time with the Z7 and v3 firmware. I can say that tracking is much improved, especially the user interface. In auto area mode, you still need to press OK to enable tracking mode, but then it starts/stops tracking based on the AF-ON (or 1/2 press shutter release)...

Nikon FF (and DX) Mirrorless rumours/ announcements

From NikonRumors: subject-tracking AF enabled in photo mode has been changed to more closely resemble that of the 3D-tracking option for digital SLR cameras. Thank heavens! I need to download this and try it. I really disliked the original subject tracking UX.

Nikon FF (and DX) Mirrorless rumours/ announcements

I've mostly given up on Nikon doing lightweight for their high-end lenses. The 500/5.6 PF is great -- I use it all the time now even though its shorter than I'd like. Canon and Sony are on top of it for light weight high-end lenses. Marc

Nikon FF (and DX) Mirrorless rumours/ announcements

Some low light photographers do prefer the DSLR with its own AF system that can see IR flash assist. Mirrorless needs to use something that's not deep red or use the "low light" setting that is a bit slow to focus.

Nikon FF (and DX) Mirrorless rumours/ announcements

That's a great post! I'm pretty fed up with Nikon lagging a generation behind Sony/Canon in long tele weight. I could get a Canon 600mm f/4 IS II used for about $6k at 8.6 lb or a Nikon 600mm f/4e for maybe $10k used (if you can find one) at 8.4 lb. And the Nikon f/4G is maybe $5k used but...

Nikon FF (and DX) Mirrorless rumours/ announcements

That is a light camera! The Z50 + 500mm f/5.6 PF is only 1.83kg (4.07 lb). That is almost as light as the Em1m2 + 100-400 at 1.56kg (3.46 lb), which is, AFAIK, the lightest long-reach PDAF birding camera. The d7500 + 500mm comes in at 2.07kg (4.60 lb). I wonder how the AF and tracking is on...

Nikon FF (and DX) Mirrorless rumours/ announcements

If the Z50 is a d7500-based sensor, I doubt there will be a d7600. It does seem odd to bill it as a d7500-class camera and have those lower end consumer lenses. I suspect they are going for small size & weight as the differentiating features, at least that's all that makes sense to me given...

Nikon FF (and DX) Mirrorless rumours/ announcements

I think this is typical Nikon. Release a first set of not-quite-what-you-want lenses and bodies so people buy them, then release the lens/bodies that people really want. I'm sure they will do a new all-purpose walk-around Z lens in 9-12 months. From the design patents, the bodies look like...

Nikon FF (and DX) Mirrorless rumours/ announcements

To make people buy the 24 when the really want the 20, so they then buy the 20 later. I don't understand the 28-70/2.8-3.5. I could understand doing a kit zoom that is smaller and lighter weight. But they already have an f/4, so could this be smaller? I don't think so. It's a head...

Nikon FF (and DX) Mirrorless rumours/ announcements

My understanding is that telephotos don't really benefit from the wider mount or decreased flange distance, so adapting them (assuming the AF speed is the same) is about the same image. Sure, they could be a tiny bit shorter, but it is not on the scale of differences you see in the shorter...

Nikon FF (and DX) Mirrorless rumours/ announcements

They need to keep a prosumer DSLR or get a new FTZ-D that can do screw drive lenses with an aperture feeler. The current situation w/ the FTZ and older lenses is a joke. I don't think Nikon can afford to release another Z mount with subpar sports AF compared to the high-end DSLRs -- well, at...

Nikon FF (and DX) Mirrorless rumours/ announcements

Is there much of a market for a small sensor ILC? It seems like it's 24-200 P&S or superzoom bridge cameras.

Nikon FF (and DX) Mirrorless rumours/ announcements

Those numbers start getting into the realm of 'do not care' for me. 200 frame buffer? It is rare that I shoot more than 10 at a time. Maybe if they had XQD instead of SD, they wouldn't need such a buffer. With slow lenses (5.6 - 6.3), I think better ISO performance is more important than MP...

Nikon FF (and DX) Mirrorless rumours/ announcements

Super high MP is not necessarily a desirable thing. You will see edge blurring from minor shakes unless you have good posture, high shutter speed, or good IBIS. No one really needs more than 24-ish MP unless you want really big enlargements or a lot of cropping. With the d850 (45MP), shot at...

Nikon FF (and DX) Mirrorless rumours/ announcements

On the no DSLR d500 successor. It could be Nikon looks at it like this: there will be no dslr competition for the d500, even it it ages another few years. Canon's not doing it, unless the 90d turns out much better than some fear. Sony's mirrorless. So the d500 will stay tops DX even if they...

Nikon FF (and DX) Mirrorless rumours/ announcements

The Z7 is very close to a d850 mirrorless. Lloyd Chambers now recommends the Z7 over the d850 for new kits. I think for everything except action, the Z7 is up there with the d850. What it lacks is a grip, pro connectors for shutter release (it uses the flimsy usb release). And if you use...

Nikon FF (and DX) Mirrorless rumours/ announcements

Nikon Rumors says the consumer models (d3500, d5600) along with the favorite d500 will not get a DSLR replacement, they will go mirrorless. The d7500, d750, d850, and d5 will all get a DSLR update. Probably because they are essentially ready-to-go. I take this to mean that if the d500 is not...

MB-N10 battery pack for Z getting closer https://nikonrumors.com/2019/06/27/nikon-mb-n10-battery-pack-for-nikon-z-cameras-registered-in-korea.aspx/ Nikon rumors says it's been registered in Korea. I assume it will be like the MB-D80, which was 2 front loading batteries...

Nikon FF (and DX) Mirrorless rumours/ announcements

You probably saw the summary on NikonRumors: Nikon is working to make the autofocus in mirrorless Z cameras as good as the Nikon D5: "We are in the middle of the process of trying to catch up with the tracking functions that the D5 currently provides." On Nikon Z AF: "phase-detect pixels can...
