    What Bird? Luhačovice (Czech Republic)

Help! I received this info from an American friend in Europe: "I am in the spa town of Luhačovice (Czech Republic) and I noticed a bird struggling. He must have flown into the window you see him at. "He is quite beautiful and I'm not sure whether he is rare or not but thought you'd be...

Tripod and head for slight female birder

using the center column on any tripod significantly reduces the stability of the set-up - especially if conditions are even slightly "breezy" (the spotting scope will act like a sail in the wind, harvesting that breeze!). Extend the legs instead...and to save weight, get rid of the center...

    cape may in late September?

Hawk Mtn gets very crowded in October though it is the best time to visit to watch the Accipiter flight (10-15 Oct approx). Go during the week...say Mon-Thu. Book your hotel now because there are limited number of places to stay in the Kempton area (check Air BnB's too). I trust you will have a...

    cape may in late September?

for raptors...cold fronts in early to mid-October. For warblers...that can be as early as August...Personally I prefer October as a good/great day means many falcons flying low past the observation deck (Peregrines/Merlins)...days with northwest winds usually are best for migrant raptors.

Carbon tripod and head for heavy lens.

For big spotting scopes, as Bill Atwood recommends, get a pan/tilt video head. Why? You need something (a handle!) to pan/turn the scope with...you don't want to use the ocular (eyepiece) of the scope to do that - which you would have to do if you got a ballhead (eg Flexshooter). I like this one...

Tripod and head for slight female birder

The person (aka "slender/petite" woman) should look for a tripod that supports at least 5x the weight of the scope. So if her scope weighs 3 pounds total, get a tripod that supports AT LEAST 15 pounds. Similarly the tripod head must support at least 5x (and preferably a bit more like 7/8x) the...

    From my Manhattan Window

Hi Arthur - this past Sunday (3 July 2021), we had some migrants on the Bob Bird Walk in Central Park: at least two (seen together) Worm-eating Warblers and a Swamp Sparrow. The latter is an early record southbound migration date for the species (SwSp). Worm-eating Warblers are notorious early...

Carbon tripod and head for heavy lens.

Carbon Fiber. Leofoto offers best value/quality right now...they have a deal that includes the head. Go for a three section tripod if possible - the extra fourth section (though makes the tripod smaller for packing) gets to be annoying to extend time after time (x three legs). If you can buy...

    North Dakota - June 2021

Both LeConte's Sparrow and Baird's Sparrow are easy to bring in using sound recordings...very close in fact (no need of a scope). Try your luck with Upland Sandpiper and Marbled Godwit (respond well), and with some luck Wilson's Phalarope. Good Luck!
