    Not a helpful comment. I didn't claim that the OP needed one. I described my own use for a levelling head (not base) and suggested that it was probably not worth buying for general use. I don't know how you interpret that as being wrong.

    I think you may misunderstand, but a levelling head is a type of tripod head, it isn't an additional item. I have a levelling (bowl) head on a heavy tripod I bought for videography, and it's extremely useful for seawatching, when the ability to pan horizontally and keep the horizon level is...
