Need help with hawk - Vancouver, BC

I saw this bird at Reifel Refuge last week near Vancouver. Is this a juvenile red-tailed hawk, and not a rough-legged hawk?

Need help with ptarmigans - Alaska

I see these birds last week at Kenai Fjords National Park near Seward, Alaska. Are these white-tailed or rock ptarmigans?

Need help with owl - So. Cal.

I saw this owl near Los Angeles about 3 years ago. What species is this? At the time I didn't think much about it assuming it was great horned but on second thought while reviewing old photos was wondering if it could be long-eared. It was sleeping partially obscured by branches during the...

    Pacific Loon? - So. Cal.

I saw this bird near Los Angeles yesterday. The photo was taken from quite a distance with low light. My impression was that this was a pacific loon (as opposed to common) because of the rounded head and the even border between the gray and white on the neck. Any thoughts? Because of the...

Need help with wigeon - So. Cal.

I saw this bird near Los Angeles yesterday morning. I was wondering if it was a female Eurasian wigeon but don't encounter female-type Eurasian wigeons often enough to have a lot of confidence in the ID. I had some concern because I thought Eurasian wigeon would not show as much contrast in...

Need help with immature gulls - So Cal

I saw each of these birds in the Los Angeles area from mid-October to mid-November of this year. Are these all Herring Gulls?

Need help with pink-legged gull, So Cal

I saw this bird last weekend near Oxnard, CA. The pale eye and faint gray streaking on the neck made me think Herring Gull, but I wasn't sure if the bill was quite right or the darkness of the gray on the back (could be distorted by lighting) were right for this species. Western Gull is most...

    Long-billed curlew? - So. Cal.

I saw this bird last month near Los Angeles at some distance and not very clearly or else I probably wouldn't need advice about the ID. Is the bird in the background with the whimbrels a long-billed curlew? I thought so because of the lack of patterning on the head. However, I was unsure if...

Need help with hummingbird - So. Cal.

I saw this bird this morning in the foothills near Los Angeles. Any thoughts as to what this is? I am thinking this is a female calliope hummingbird because of the long wings and orange on the flanks. I do not have experience with this species so wanted second opinions (and want to make sure...

    Cooper's or Sharp-shinned Hawk? - So. Cal.

I saw this bird last month near Los Angeles. Is this a juvenile sharp-shinned or Cooper's hawk? I was leaning toward sharp-shinned (though the tail seems rounded not flat) because of the rounded head, streaking all the way down the belly and thinnish legs but wanted a second opinion.

Large sparrow ID question - So. Cal.

It was at Lake Balboa near Encino so not all that far from Agoura Hills.

Large sparrow ID question - So. Cal.

I saw this bird near Los Angeles today. It was with lark sparrows but I wasn't entirely convinced this was also a lark sparrow (seemed a little larger, had white edges to the wings, light streaking on the breast -- lark bunting?). Any thoughts as to what this is?

Lesser or Greater Yellowlegs? - So. Cal.

I saw this bird this afternoon near Los Angeles. My initial thought was that this was a lesser yellowlegs (less common here) because I've seen greater yellowlegs with longer bills than this and this bird was more sedate and not as frantic as I see greater yellowlegs typically behaving...

    Swamp sparrows? - So. Cal.

I saw these birds today at a small lake near Los Angeles. I was told by other birders that at least 3 swamp sparrows were seen in the area where I was birding. I thought I heard one calling but didn't get clear views or photos of any of them. There were also many song sparrows present. I was...

Need help with hummingbird - So. Cal.

I saw this bird yesterday near Los Angeles. Though the lighting isn't great in the photo and it's very difficult to judge the color of the gorget, I thought this might be a black-chinned hummingbird since to me it seemed more slender and longer-billed than Anna's. Black-chinned, however, would...

    Northern Shrike? - New Mexico

I saw this bird last weekend in south central New Mexico. Is this a northern shrike? I have no experience with this species but I thought so because of the relatively narrow black band (I thought it should be thicker on loggerhead), no black above the eye, apparent barring on the chest...

Need help with sparrow/finch - So Cal

I saw this bird this morning near Los Angeles in a tree with chipping sparrows. It's not obvious to me what this is, with the black around the beak and the white throat. Any thoughts?

    Ladder-backed woodpeckers? - So. Cal.

I saw these birds last winter in the Antelope Valley in an area where both Nuttall's and ladder-backed woodpeckers are known to occur. Are these both ladder-backed woodpeckers. I wasn't sure I could positively ID with enough field characteristics because of the quality of the photos (too far...

    Brewer's or Clay-colored sparrow? - So. Cal.

I saw this bird today near Los Angeles. Is this a Brewer's or a clay-colored sparrow? I thought it might be clay-colored because of it's clean gray nape although it didn't seem to have a crown stripe and it's facial features were light, but I wasn't sure if clay-colored sparrows are lighter...

    Baird's & Solitary Sandpipers? - So. Cal.

I saw these birds this evening in the Los Angeles River. I didn't get great views but maybe there's enough here for an ID. Photo 1: Is this a Baird's sandpiper? Photo 2: Is this a solitary sandpiper?

Need help with pelagic birds - So. Cal.

I didn't think of that, but I can see how this could be a dark-morph juvenile jaeger. I thought the tail might be too short for a jaeger, but I guess a juvenile jaeger wouldn't have long streamers (?). I couldn't get as clear a view of the tail as I would have liked.

Need help with pelagic birds - So. Cal.

I saw these birds today off the coast of Long Beach. Photo #1: Is this a South Polar Skua? Photo #2: Is this a Pigeon Guillemot? Photo #3: Is this a Red Phalarope?
