Help with Shrike Taxonomy - Durham 1999

I saw the shrike at Marsden, Co Durham in 1999. At the time it was listed as an Isabelline Shrike. Can someone please help me and let me know which of the new British list shrikes it actually was. I’ve seen it listed as a red-tailed and an Isabelline???

any update about birding in Jordan?

I’ve just returned from Jordan and to be honest it was a chastening experience. My wife and I were travelling on a private cultural tour and had a driver throughout. We visited Um Qays, Jarash, Mount Nebo, Petra, Wadi Rum, Aqaba and the Dead Sea. I didn’t meet another birder on our travels and...

    Black screen using iphone

When I don’t use an adapter and I put my iPhone X directly against the lens of the telescope the bird will show for about one second before the camera goes black. Does anyone have any idea why this happens and how it can be sorted? Thank you in advance

    Costa Rica trip help please

To clarify. I thought it was a blue-winged warbler as it was the only bird that fitted the description. It was only when I put the info into eBird and they told me it was a rarity that I questioned myself and withdrew the sighting, hence this conversation. If you feel I have behaved...

    Costa Rica trip help please

I had to write a rare bird report when I filled it in on eBird, which made me panic a bit, particularly as I saw it in a garden.

    Costa Rica trip help please

Ok. I felt it was a blue-winged warbler, but I have no experience of this species and to be honest very little experience of American warblers.

    Costa Rica trip help please

Awaiting our flight back at the hotel buena vista outside San Jose, I saw a couple of new world warblers in the hotel gardens. Only one did I see very well but no photograph. I initially thought it was a yellow warbler as I’d seen a few during the previous two weeks. But I noticed it didn’t have...

    Costa Rica trip help please

I’ve just started my two week trip to Costa Rica and I know I’m going to need a lot of help over the next two weeks. Bear with me as I’m an old world birder. My first photos are rubbish. Taken from my hotel window in San Jose. It should be a Baltimore oriole as it had an oriole’s bill. The...

Costa Rica family holiday - telescope or no telescope?

I’m about to head off on a two week family holiday visiting Tortuguero, Arenal Ob Lodge, Canó negro, Monteverde (specifically Curi Cancha) and Manuel Antonio. As I said it’s mainly a family holiday but I am taking time out at each site for some birding and have a couple of private guides lined...

Advice wanted for Savegre area. Upcoming trip in two weeks.

At the end of our two week trip to Costa Rica, we are staying in Manuel Antonio for a few days in April. My wife is taking my daughter on a rafting tour on the Savegre. I was wondering if it would be feasible to catch a ride on the tour bus and bird around the area on my own. We will already...

    Opticron mm3 focus wheel broken

I wonder if anyone has had this problem. I love my mm3, but yesterday as I was out on the field focusing on a surf scoter, the wheel focus started to feel loose. On further inspection I realised it was actually screwing away from the body. I tightened it up and everything was fine, I thought...

Surely not a wren! Tyttenhanger, Uk

My son took these yesterday. He initially thought it was a wren, but it doesn’t appear to have any barring. Is there too much dark for cetti?
