    Field guides in the future

This already exists - BirdNet from Cornell is one example. It's free but needs online connection. I have only tried it in Poland and it works pretty well, not sure if it would handle tropical habitats with the huge gamut of possible species.

    The PASTA project

Apparently it was the biggest twitch in polish history with over 70 people on site at one moment. It's event in major newspapers. The bird is still present reportedly.

Best way to get documentation photos seawatching

I have taken my only photos of a Leach's Storm Petrel using a 400mm lens. I did not see the bird in the viewfinder, but my wife was standing next to me and giving me descriptions of waves around which it flies ... The bird turned out clear on the pictures, but I don't think this is a reliable...

    The PASTA project

Well, I have to admit that my motivation for this project has gone done a little bit today, since we just twitched one in Warsaw :) First record for Poland since 2004! Bird was found on 27/12 on a feeder right outside of a someone's window, then not found again until 1/1. Since then it was seen...

    Ivory-Billed Woodpecker continued

    Latest IOC diary updates

Back to birds - I noticed the split of "Turkestan Short-toed Lark", but I am utterly confused as to how to find any. The new species includes heinei, aharonii, pseudobaetica and persica - meaning that the old one - now called Mediterranean retains rufescens, polatzeki, apetzii, nicolli and most...

So are we changing the entirety of Tyrannidae next? At least Cattle Tyrant is pretty offensive to vegans :)

How to get into reptiles and amphibians?

Finally, after a long period when my wife has been putting the task off in favor of work (how dares she!), we now have all our herps IDed and catalogized - 145 species so far: https://www.zonerama.com/ManzeleEbrovi1/904843

    Latest IOC diary updates

I would just like to hear how does the removal of the offensive names personally affect anyone here. What issues so dire that you feel the need to constantly fight against it does it cause to you? The whole "problem of PC culture" is just a boogeyman created by people who can't stand that...

    Latest IOC diary updates

Considering that renaming a few birds costs next to nothing, then I don't really see the logic of the argument. If you are concerned for the well-being of the people, do something about that, the renaming of the birds doesn't really stop you, does it?

    Top Birding Destinations on Earth

China has the specific drawback that a foreigner on a holiday can't drive a car there (you must have a local license). I have never been in China, but a friend of mine lived there for a year and he told me that travel off the beaten path independently is pretty difficult unless you speak at...

    Top Birding Destinations on Earth

I am still a bit confused about Colombia. Some people claim how safe it is, most governments put the longest travel advisories from the whole continent for it. Maps can be found with "dangerous" areas, sometimes slightly contradictory. If it were a country that could be freely explored, it would...

    Fish List

It's not that hard from ferries in Canary Islands (from which is also my photo).

    Merry Christmas!

The ID forum is the main reason I did not give up on birding at the start. Because I had no idea at all how to ID the birds! Thanks to the people here, I understood that all the small brown things are completely different birds and it really jumpstarted my interest in world birding. This seems...

Grouse Moors to be licensed in Scotland

But was that a "home"? To me that's the weird thing here, I don't think these protections were even meant for large tracts of country used for business, but for private homes.

Grouse Moors to be licensed in Scotland

As always, this is pretty complicated once one sees the legal details (thanks Deb as always for extensive info) Personally I am in favor of privacy protection for individuals in their homes, but extending it to vast tracts of lands is another thing ...

Grouse Moors to be licensed in Scotland

Yeah, the licensing is definitely the right thing, but I would simply have thought that you don't need a specific measure to say that people can't do illegal things ... it's like it's already included in the things being "illegal" or something. But if they will be made responsible for lost...

Grouse Moors to be licensed in Scotland

I have to say that this thread has left my hugely confused. The shooting of the Hen Harriers on the Grouse moors is illegal, right? Those are private enterprises, right? How are they still running then? Do you have no law enforcement in the UK or what? I consider it rather straightforward that...
