Zeiss SFL8x30 vs Swarovski CL Companion 8x30

From UK prices the CL Companions pretty much sit midway between the Zeiss Conquest and the SFLs. Not having tried the 8x30 SFLs I can't say how they compare to those, but optically and build-wise I would place the Companions a little way above the very good Conquest 8x32s.

Zeiss SFL8x30 vs Swarovski CL Companion 8x30

In the UK the CL 8x30 is £990 vs £1300 for the SFL so a big price difference. The UVs are £1369 so about the same price as the SFLs...

    Octopus farming

I thnk the ethics of eating animals or specific animals (there are obviously differing cultural and religious views) is a separate discussion to the ethics of farming octopus. Should intelligence (as we best judge it) be a consideration in what we farm? Is keeping a non-sociable animal in close...

    Octopus farming

Quail can form winter flocks, but yes they're solitary (or paired) in summer. Hadn't thought about Mink, but was really thinking about animals farmed for food. I honestly didn't know Turbot or Sea Bass were farmed - always asssumed they were caught in the sea.

    Octopus farming

Putting aside the ethics of eating sentient creatures, I can't off the top of my head, think of any other solitary creature that is regularly farmed. Most creatures farmed are either herd/flock or shoal forming - are there other exceptions?

    Kowa BD 8x32

I've only looked through the 2nd gen in 8x32, and it wasn't for more than a few minutes, but it seemed a very good performer, especially at the price point.

    WAITING FOR TRINOVID 7x42 BN

Thanks I was hoping the answer was better on the old BA/BN. It's one thing that I find irritating - I don't have a strong preference between flat v conventional providining the sweet spot is large enough. Probably best to wait until I can try a pair rather than risjk a blind purchase online.

Which Spring migrants have you seen?

Difficult to tell - seemingly an increase in Chiffchaff and Skylark activity over the last couple of weeks, but both over-winter in my part of the UK. Both Sand Martin and Alpine Swift have been observed by others within a mile of my house over the past three days, but annoyingly not by me!

Any thoughts on how CA is with the old BA/BN compared to modern Trinovids?

    Confused: Swarovski, Zeiss, 8x, 10x

There's no perfect binocular for all conditions. If you're only going for one size it's very much going for the best compromise. I mainly bird over open marsh land where I like the extra reach a 10 gives me, but if I take an 8 or a 7 I don't think I miss much, just the odd bird here and there...

    Zeiss SFL 8x30?

Yes UK prices include VAT, but it was more how in the UK the 8x30 SFL is near enough the same cost as the Ultravid HD+, whilst in the US it looks like the SFL is much cheaper than the Ultravid HD+., that I was noticing.

    Zeiss SFL 8x30?

Interesting how it differs in the UK (well on actual prices - not sure on RRP) - 8x30SFL £1300 with 8x32 Ultravid+ £1369 so pretty similar in price.

    Twite confirmation from description

It's years since I've seen a Twite. Rare enough now in Kent to be a description species for the local Ornithological Society.

    Nikon Fieldscope III

I'm getting a deadlink on the zoom, but the 30x should be fine - do note though I don't think it's the Wide-Field version (not terribly narrow) and I think has the simple coatings. You're right Prostaff eyepieces won't fit.

    Nikon Fieldscope III

These are the newer ones: Nikon | Sport Optics | MC Fieldscope Eyepieces for Observation (the DS work fine too). Most of the original Fieldscope I eyepieces should be fine too. If in doubt ask on here with a photo - there are plenty of Fieldscope users.

    Nikon Fieldscope III

Replacement eyepieces are widely available used and some can still be found new. Personally I prefer the fixed magnification wide field eyepieces to the zooms, but the zooms are good. Some of the newer ones will be marked with three magnifications, as they can be used on the ED82 ED50 as well as...

    Storage of equipment

I keep caps on so dust doesn't get on the optics, lens bodies/camera bodies/binocular bodies can just be wiped with a damp cloth. Fungus is much more likely to develop if kept sealed up - airflow helps.
