    Good Book

John, I can't lay my hands on my copy of the book you mention but can recommend Gosney's Finding Birds in Southern Cyprus, the latest version of which does include GPS co-ordinates. David

I think this is an owl, but which one?

Agree with Tawny Owl for both sounds.

    Audio Recorder Recommendations?

The Zoom F3 is small by itself, yes, but it needs a microphone to go with it. Might be worth trying one of the Tascams, eg the DR 05X or 07X. I haven't used either myself (I use the discontinued Olympus LS3 and LS11) but I know someone who gets decent results with the DR 05. Re. using the...

    Moth, S Yorks, 13th Sep

Hello. This was taken in S Yorks today. Is it a faded Straw Dot or something else? Size looked ok for that sp. Sorry about the quality (I had to use my phone). Thanks, Dave

Carrying parabolic dish in the field?

I tried a strap to carry mine at first - attached by tripod screw to the bottom of the handle - but it was awkward and made noises when I was walking. I now use a cord (actually a long bootlace) tied to the base of the handle and then just sling it over a shoulder. Works really well and I hardly...

2cy large gull, S Yorks, April

Obviously its difficult to judge eg head shape from one image but in the few seconds I was actually watching it the jizz didn't strike me as classically Caspian. Plumage-wise I thought it looked ok. It still annoys me that it must have flown off when I turned to get my tripod from the car (the...

2cy large gull, S Yorks, April

Just looking for opinions on this gull which was at a local res a week or so ago. This was all I saw of it, as it flew off unseen soon after I arrived. Thanks. Dave

    Crossbills

From the authors of the paper in the the previous post, a revised blogpost now including distribution maps for each vocal type: https://avesrares.wordpress.com/2021/02/01/crossbill-call-types-in-the-western-palearctic-a-birders-perspective_copy/ The section on type N15 might be of particular...

    Thekla/Crested Lark, Souss estuary, Morocco

Thanks Muppit17, much appreciated, esp the helpful pointers with the songs and the confirmation that Thekla does occur at Oued Souss.

    Thekla/Crested Lark, Souss estuary, Morocco

Yes, I did consider that at the time, and it was one of the reasons I was in two minds about the ID and made the effort to get video with sound.

    Thekla/Crested Lark, Souss estuary, Morocco

Many thanks Deb and Alexander. I must say the song doesn't remind me of Crested either, but I can't say I'm very familiar with Thekla's song from anywhere. Assuming it is a Thekla, I'm guessing it's most likely ruficolor(?).

    Thekla/Crested Lark, Souss estuary, Morocco

Pics and song from a video taken in April a few years ago. At the time I wasn't convinced either way, but now see that the first primary appears to be at least as long as the PCs. I'd be grateful for any opinions. Dave

    Winterwatch 2021

It's the calls in the background I'm meaning. Out of curiosity I made sonograms, and there are some which seem unlike any known W Palearctic vocal type (as well as others which look similar to Parrot).

Yes. Some very odd crossbill calls on the soundtrack to that piece though....

    Moon through Kowa Prominar 883 + APM 12.5mm + 1.6x extender

Thanks for this. Can I ask if you've compared it without the extender against the Kowa 25-60x at similar magnification (40x?)? I assume the APM has a wider f.o.v., but is it noticeably brighter? Dave
