    Birding sites near Portsmouth

That makes life a lot easier! Farlington Marshes and Titchfield Haven would be the obvious targets. Titchfield is between Soton and Portsmouth and a lovely little reserve with good hides. You can combine it with the canal path along the floods for some extra species, incl. Glossy Ibis...

Changing Status of Firecrest in UK

I certainly see them more in my local area (edge of the New Forest) than when I moved here, 14 years ago. Prevalence seems strongly habitat dependant. In my back yard (central Hythe) I've had breeding Firecrest for the past few years, but Goldcrest is a rare winter visitor. Dibden Bay next door...

    Iceland in February - tips?

Closest to Rvk I've seen WTE was Hvalfjordur, Gyrfalcon only once in the city and a few times near Grindavik (all winter records). I recommend walking the coastal path from the harbour area to Seltjarnarnes. The scenery is nice (views of Snaefell on a clear day!) and you'll see lots of gulls...

London Area Business Trip - Looking for tips!

Fair point! I had a look around on eBird for sites near Heathrow that should give you a good cross-section of UK winter birding. You'll miss out on the coast because of the driving distance, but that's not the end of the world. How about spending your time between these sites: Burnham Beeches...

London Area Business Trip - Looking for tips!

Hey Kraken, One option you have is to head down the M3 to the New Forest NP - should take less than 1.5h on a Saturday morning. You get a good variety of habitats in close proximity, and I can give you a detailed itinerary since it's my local area. Beaulieu area for all common and rarer UK...

    Birding goals for 2023

Joining the relaunch of the UK Patchwork Challenge (excited about that). Keeping a casual 10 km local area list as well to add a but of variety. And I'll try to focus more on green, slow, local birding experiences - my life is busy enough as it is!

Rarities you just don‘t get excited for

Same here, Steve. I've only done a "proper" year list once, and driving around chasing rarities started to annoy me towards the end. Switching back to patching in 2023, and using travel opportunities for work to see things I haven't seen before.

    Birding experiences in Europe/WPal

Agree! I briefly visited Batumi during the autumn migration - and even on a quiet day it was a great experience. I'll have to look into Besh Bermag, had not heard of it - cheers.

    Birding experiences in Europe/WPal

That sounds amazing, Jan, thanks for sharing. Eastern Poland definitely gone up a few notches on my wish list of places to visit. Where I live now in the southern UK there are no avian spectacles like that, sadly.

    Birding experiences in Europe/WPal

Sounds like a great day, and Holy Island is a lovely place - but rarity hunting is sort of the opposite of what I was after (although it can be plenty of fun in its own way). The relaxed wader watching in evening light, that's more like it :)

Ah yes I believe there is some sort of bird festival then? Sounds like a wonderful place

    Birding experiences in Europe/WPal

I was recently thinking about birding experiences - those moments, places or events with birds that make you go "wow!" - and I was curious to hear what you think are the standout ones that can be had in Europe and/or the Western Palearctic. A few that came to mind... Displaying Cranes at Lake...

    Weekend near KL

Hi Steve, I ended up going to Bukit Tinggi for 2 nights and did not regret it! It's just 1-1.5h drive from central KL - depending on the traffic - and an easy location with plenty of good birds. Checklists from my trip: https://ebird.org/checklist/S115846982 and...

    WP not-so-big years

Interesting, my experience/perspective is the exact opposite! The county/country/continent thing is very common across North America, Britain, Australia, etc. but I also know examples from the Netherlands, Iceland, Mexico, Argentina, India, Malaysia, etc. So definitely not confined to the...

    WP not-so-big years

That's fair enough and I am not opposed at all. It's just that, within the context of listing the world over, doing it by biogeography is a bit of an idiosyncrasy. County lists, country lists, the ABA, it's all done by (admittedly entirely artificial) administrative boundaries - the WP (however...

    WP not-so-big years

This may be slightly controversial, but I feel a geographical (country-based) list would make more sense, especially when comparing to the ABA. For example, the EU-ME-NA region is very well defined and would make for a great challenge. So no to Cape Verde, or those odd bits of Mauritania and...

    Weekend near KL

It's quite late, something like 9 am. Highly recommended to stay at least one night at the resort for early access (reception are very helpful, they get security to let you in at any time of day). The resort itself is...tacky, weird, terrible food, dated rooms, but cheap(ish) and amazing location.

    Qatar (Irakhiya Farm) in August

Hey Josh, Having just returned from my trip, I can say a stopover in Qatar is totally worth it, even in summer. Access is really easy, there is nobody there, no barriers etc. They're doing a lot of roadworks, so any maps may be out of date soon. However, I found it easy enough with Google Maps...

    Qatar (Irakhiya Farm) in August

Hi Josh, Just a holding message, but I'll be doing this exact thing next week. 12 hour layover and getting a car to do some birding at Irakhiya/Karanah & Al Wakra beach. I will let you know how it goes! Best, Joost

    Weekend near KL

Thanks Dave. I prefer a steady pace myself as well, just enjoy the birds and don't worry too much about the size of list. Having said that, I am thinking of doing Saturday at Krau WR and Sunday at Bukit Tinggi (staying at both locations the night before). You weren't kidding when you said the...
