True 'dat....the photo is at least 20 years old, I collect this stuff.....

yes, that's the idea. very unscientific but interesting comparison to do. Just get the objectives lenses or eyepiece lenses next to each and look at how bright the light reflections are coming off each lens.

maybe just use the Habicht on the days when it's in a good mood??? :D

Why don't you try E2's from a better dealer? I don't like Amazon, it's like Walmart, I never buy anything there. There's also a pair on sale here in the classifieds. (unfortunately I now have to shop at Amazon to buy groceries since they assimilated the Whole Foods grocery chain here in the...

These aren't cheap for sure, but considering what you get, the value is excellent. Compare to the Leica 7x35 Retrovid for example. Even the mid-priced 30 and 32mm roofs are more expensive and smaller aperture than these. I had great fun with them yesterday. Definitely appreciated the light...

Neil - thanks for the update - looking forward to your review! I've got a 3-hour bird tour tomorrow at 7AM and you've got me thinking about taking these instead of one of my 42's. It's a 2 mile walk and I'm not looking forward to the weight of a 42mm on my neck. It's a mix of close-up woods...

Brock - thanks for the history and info on Greg! A lot of people have enjoyed that event and will continue to do so in the future. I love the idea of amateur science, amateur astronomy. We live in an era of accreditation and indentured academic servitude (to become a pro scientist), those...

Brock, that's some interesting history, I didn't know it was going all the way back in 2001, that's good you guys didn't cancel that year. I've read about people spending a whole week, I guess they were spending the week before the event there. Artificial light is bad on birds, many...

I know a lot of people that have gone to the BFSP, it looks awesome, I've wanted to go but the 10 hour drive is tough, especially when Maine's dark skies are only a few hours away from me. There are some good star parties in northern & eastern Maine in late summer & fall. I've been to...

Here's a closeup on N. America....the whole Northeast is bad, upstate NY, New England, and anywhere near the Great Lakes. In astronomy we've all noticed 100% clear skies getting harder to find over the last 30-40 years, we seem to have persistent high cirrus more, maybe from the instability of...

    Nikon 10x35 E11

I have noticed things going dark quickly in the 10x35 at the end of the day, maybe not the best choice for viewing in twilight. I'm here at 43 degrees north in New England and it's just as cloudy as olde England I'm afraid. It gets more cloudy as you move northeast in the USA into eastern...

Thanks Henry, that's a good suggestion, I'll probably just leave it as it's not too hard to remember where it goes. It's interesting that the diopter imbalance and miscollimation can be hard to see during the day, but become visible on bright star images at night. It makes me wonder if the...

    Nikon 10x35 E11

One more update - got the E2's out for astronomy last night and was very impressed. If I had to guess, the transmission on these is well upward of 90%. Optics are extremely bright and sharp. Galaxies M81 and M82 visible with details. Venus appeared as a sharp disk with the gibbous shape...

I'm back to rave a little more about these, after a long club outing on Plum Island yesterday. I can't believe how well the E2's work out there! On a bright sunny day at the coast. It's all about the easy eye placement - I didn't think this was possible in a 3mm exit pupil. Very tolerant of...

OK, I took delivery of the new E2's this week - I love them! Did a showdown with the 10x35 E-C's and they have ended up in the classifieds. They're actually totally different binoculars, I didn't realize this was a rebuild from the ground up. The E2's are much larger in size, while retaining...

    Nikon 10x35 E11

Thanks for the info! I had the 10x35-EC out again yesterday and it seems excellent to me. I had my top bird sighting of the last month - huge immature bald eagle flying right around us on Deer Island. Basically hovering overhead and swooping around looking for fish. There have been fewer of...

    Nikon 10x35 E11

It looks like I may be getting ready to order a new 10x35 E2. I discovered that the 80's E 35mm's are 2 ounces lighter than the 90's Criterion and E2's. Thinking I might as well upgrade my 10x35 E-C to the current model. I really like these, they are a candidate to replace my 10x42 EDG, just...

interesting - so Nikon actually brought back the 7x model when they transitioned from HG to EDG

This photo is probably 20 years old, it's possible that Tele Vue is using better coatings now. But they weren't in the 90's, that's for sure. You could be right about the NL's optics, it's all speculation here, I'm not privy to the design specs on these of course. The 56mm SLC do look good...

    Nikon 10x35 E11

Here's an example of the sidewalk test on astronomy eyepieces from Roland Christen - you can see the two oculars on the upper left have better coatings. They're from Zeiss and Astro-Physics, the other two are Tele Vue:

I think the lack of FL/ED glass in the E2's is partially responsible for the lower price. Apparently the light path, and f-ratio, is longer in porros so achromat objectives work better than they do in roofs. Longer f-ratio is another way to eliminate false color. And the porro still have...

    Nikon 10x35 E11

I wouldn't be so sure. They have the same coatings and glass as other modern Nikons right? I thought the advantage of modern roofs is the waterproofing & flatter field. Adjustable eyecups. Rubber cladding. If you automatically assume the $$$$ binocular is best you might be paying for...

    Nikon 10x35 E11

I'm having fun with a new/old pair of 10x35 E's (E 1). There's more to it than just the optics, it's the whole package. The short & stubby porros feel different from roofs - they seem easier to keep steady then my 10x42 roofs (EDG). The feel of grasping the porro body is different and I...
